383 .30 over bore 906 heads. The cam went flat an the engine needs rebuilt. I pulled the heads and noticed scratches in the cylinders also pistons an valves were very black. is that normal for a flatend cam? can i save the engine? and what needs to be done the get it running again?

Scratched cylinders need a rebore + new pistons/rings, depending how deep the scratches are. You're 0.030" over already, hopefully enough meat there to suit avail oversize pistons.

Black pistons and valves - if dry powdery black - a sign of rich mixture/sticky choke. If more wet and black - a sign of oil getting past rings and burning, which is consistent with scratched bores. Scratched bores usually caused by incorrect clearances, over heating, poor or contaminated oil, dirt ingestion (i.e. no air cleaner). Your oil was likely contaminated by all the metal from your worn down cam lobes.

Cams usually go flat due to bad initial run-in, excessive spring pressure and/or oil with insufficient zinc.

Any engine can be saved, it just takes money and time. What it needs to get it running is determined by stripping it right down, inspecting/measuring it all.

Have you ever rebuilt an engine yourself? If not, this would be a good one to start with. You would strip engine right down and take block, crank, rods/pistons and heads to an engine shop for inspection/measuring and they will tell you what machining and parts it needs. A factory service manual is a very handy source if you've never done one before.

If your not up to it, just drop it in to an engine shop and ask them - how much?

PS - Your very first post here should have been in "The Welcome Wagon" forum to introduce yourself. Also, asking such vague questions will often rightly be met with equally vague responses.

Most would have responded like this -
Q. Can i save the engine? A. Yes.
Q. What needs to be done the get it running again? A. A full rebuild.
 
thank you for your help! gives me a far better idea of what needs to happen with the engine i will be shure to be more specific next time and no i have never rebuilt an engine my self or had one rebuilt.
 
Garrett383- ok-welcome to home!!! Do you have any mechanical knowledge? If not, you may want to start looking for a rebuild site. Otherwise, get a service manual and dive in.
