4:10 Rear End - Too Much?

I have a shot at a 4:10 gear for my 1969 Road Runner, 440 (not A12). 4 Speed car. it's a 3:23 rear end which just gives no snap to the car at all. I worry 4:10 is just way too much for the 440. Anyone running this in their car, and are you happy with it?
 
no a 4.10 it wont hurt your car.

I have a 3.91 in my GTX (440/727 auto) and although it has plenty of 'snap' around town, on the highway it sucks. the damn thing is roaring at 65mph. it's so bad, I can barely have a conversation.

so as Schober says...you cruisin it, or you draggin it?
 
I have 3:91s in my GTX as well. It's a 440 car. I would say if you're going to be doing a lot of cruising and/ or highway driving I wouldn't put in a 4:10 rear end. Mine is not that great for highway driving but it's great for racing and just okay for city driving. You'll probably be disappointed depending on what you're going to use the car for. It will definitely give you a lot more kick off the line etc.
 
I have a 4:10 in my 440 Super Bee and the thing is kick *** around town. On the highway, I'm limited to driving 55 or else she's screaming. But when you need to pass someone, it's done before you finish thinking about passing.
 
I had a set of 4.10's in my GTX for a few years. Awesome fun around town, and at the strip, but like Mario says - not much fun on the open road or highways. Very noisy at speed, and you can see the fuel gauge needle move with 3x2 Holleys sucking that gas down like there's no tomorrow. Very little chance of stalling in a 4-speed when you take off, and around corners in the wet can get exciting....2nd gear burnouts in town are fun, and chirping the first 3 is always a buzz.
I swapped out to 3:55's about 3 years ago after deciding that was the mid-range ratio for my usage in the car.....not as much fun, but the car still gets along nice. :thumbsup:

Oh, and when the 4.10's came out the GTX, I put them in my A100....far out....what a racket. So noisy to drive, but what a blast. It was only an open wheeler in the truck (for fear of totally wiping out) and I absolutely melted one tire.....down to the spaghetti inside. :rofl:
 
For around Town or on Back roads. Hell yea those are alot of fun but on The Highway, You mite as well ride a bicycle. I have nothing but Country roads where i live so 3:91s in my dads Swinger are alot of fun.
 
Agree with everything that's been said but will also add that it's no fun in a standard because all you get done doing is shifting. Since I have a massive overdrive ratio I ran 4:30s for 1 summer where I could cruise 70 mph @ 1,900 rpm but still didn't like them. Shifting every 50 ft doesn't equal fast although it would blow the tires off threw the first 3 gears, 3:55s are my favorite.

I would love to get me some taller gears and really drop those RPM's a bit more. :thumbsup:

I ran a 4.10 for a few years with a 440/493. Yeah, it was an animal but also a pain in the ears at freeway speeds. I later added a Gear Vendors overdrive, then switched to a 3.91, still with the OD.
I am currently running a 3.55 without any overdrive. If you are making enough power, you do not need the additional leverage of those deep gears.
 
I'm running 4:10 in my charger with 512 stroker. Goes quite nicely!:lol:
I pretty much stay on streets and back roads. No highway travel.
So, as stated what's your planned use? Good luck.
 
so run the 410's with 29 inch tall tires.....you'll get the hole shot and cruise highways with no issue

What do ya mean "budget"?? I'm a poor folk too which is why I had to go the salvage route.:rolleyes:
 
I like 3.55 as a starting point of a good balance. Then, go up or down from there, depending on intended use. If you think you may want a little better off the line, then go 3.73. You can also adjust somewhat with rear tire diameter
 
4.10's weren't too bad for cruising around in my hemi-wagon......but I rarely got on the highways. It had 29" tires, but a butt-load of torque. So, for playin' around and at the track.. it was pretty good for double-duty.
 
Even with a 3.23 it should have some snap. I'm curious what the engine combination is. Close to stock, mild build or....? Even a low compression 440 can have plenty of punch if the tune is right.

I agree. My road runner has 3.23's....and it hauls ***.
 
I have a 4.10 Dana with 28" tires in my '66 Satellite. It's great on local streets, it does run about 3600 RPM at 65 MPH. Highway driving as normal would not be a good plan.
