4 speed tailstock bushing install

I made a tool at work that sat right inside the bushing but passed into the tailshaft with a smaller OD on it. I didn't wanna crush the bushing or damage it so this let me drive it into the housing flush with the inside lip like it was supposed to sit in there. It's so damn thin I didn't wanna have it fold up on me or screw up the edge on it. The included pic is not what I made, but gives you a similar idea.

A 4 speed needs to be disasembeld to remove the tail shaft housing. I machined a piece of aluminum to drive the bushing. Same length but about .010" smaller. The drive end is just slightly smaller than the seal recess. Some of the bushings have been tight lately in 727's. Same bushing. Make sure you check the fit before reassembling the trans.

I just did this job last week for the first time. Had a driver made, as you can see below in the picture, because of how thin the bushing was and I was worried if i used a socket it would slip and ruin the bushing. Worked great. Used it to hammer out the old one. Started to hammer in the new one and noticed it was rolling the edges slightly, so I used a press to finish it. I would recommend the press to install it where it is so thin. I know brewers does make the driver kits for this job too.

Depends if you are talking about an disassembled transmission or one in the car. If a transmission in a car, Brewers sells an excellent tool for a reasonable price for removing and installing a new tail shaft bushing with the transmission assembled. I used it last year for this and it worked great.

Depends if you are talking about an assembled transmission or one in the car. If a transmission in a car, Brewers sells an excellent tool for a reasonable price for removing and installing a new tail shaft bushing with the transmission assembled. I used it last year for this and it worked great.

For a $100 it would be worth saving the trouble of pulling the trans and disasembly with a 4 speed.

I just brought my tailshaft housing down to the local transmission shop and they installed it for free. Of course I had the transmission completely apart for rebuild.
 
I placed the seal in the freezer for a few hours then put a light coat of oil on the lip of the tail housing and tapped the edges of the seal in. No issues!
 
Tool for bushing removal, bush install tool has bushing. Piece O' cake. Works on auto or 4 speed.

Guys, the transmission is not in the car - its on my bench.
I bought another tailstock as the one I currently have has a damaged front shifter mount that cannot be repaired.

Is this the infamous bushing already in place?

Looks like some sort of deflector plate - is that suppose to be in there?
 
The first photo looks like a bushing in place. But I would not hesitate to replace it while you can. I think it should seat a bit more flush with the bevel. Just be sure to keep the drain back holes aligned and open. The second photo I don‘t know. Is it a baffle under the vent?

AR67GTX, i think you are right about the front plate being a baffle for the vent.
I'll wait till my new rear bushing comes in and compare it to what's in there now.
 
It is a vent baffle. Keep it in there or you will get an oil leak.
