This one has a large (thick) harmonic balancer, and the water pump housing inlet points strait down. If the balancer and water pump housing is changed, to a car design units, is there any issues here using it in a car ?

Thanks

Are you sure it's from a motor home? 400's did come in cars with the cast iron crank thicker balancer and with the WPH inlet pointing straight down on the passenger side....just never seen a 400 come in a MH

Just took another look, it's a 440..... Any advice on pulley's and accessories ?

Thanks.

Well, be blessed that you don't have the high mount water pump set up where the heads are also ported to the pump housing and the pump sits up a lot higher. Drop the pan and see what rods are in it. It just might have the 6 pack rods. You should be able to use the WPH in a car. Later models used them too.

I'm cautioned by the extra long/thick harmonic balancer.

Pull the crank pulley off and see if there's anything cast into the face of the dampener......like 'use with 440 cast crank only' Go here to check out the different ones. http://www.440source.com/dampers.htm

OK thanks Cranky.

77' to 79' Truck only. Going by the web page, this balancer was used on cast crankshafts. I wonder if I picked up a car balancer for a cast crank, if it would work.

I don't think the balancer will pose a problem. The crank pulley fits into the recess the balancer has so alignment is not an issue. I have ran 3 cast crank 440s with those balancers and also used regular brackets and pulleys with no problems. The water pump housing could be an oddball, but finding a traditional car type version should be easy.

Are 383 400 and 440's use all the same balancer ? I didn't measure it, but the thickness looks to be a problem, lining up pulleys, like on power steering pumps. Thinking about swap it out with one from a car, same for that water pump housing.

The crank snout is the same on all V8s, not sure if the HEMI is different. Technically, a 318 balancer will fit but the timing mark is in the wrong spot. The word "balancer" is not accurate in the case of an internally balanced engine. The correct term would be a "dampener".

And I should know that. But the term "harmonic balancer" was on my mind when I posted.

Thanks
