440 block mains. What is the best route of strengthening them? Aluminum caps? or Hughes girdle? They claim not to have a failure.

I've been told the BRC girdle is a good setup for strengthening the block.
about any girdle will work if made and installed right ...
I`ve got one I quit using thats about .300 thick...
a friend had a low 9 sec. duster , he went to alum. caps and backed the dominator off to 9.60`s to keep it together ...jfyi

All depends on your goals really. Just my own experience most failures can be caused by poorly tuned engines with detonation issues. Your average 550 HP engine doesn't really need them IMHO.

I agree with Gus.

Under 600+ HP = I have never had
a main cap problem that was not caused
by another mechanical issue in a naturally aspirated
race car.
