Thanks fellas. Is it easier to pull the transmission out than to slide it back?
Yes you pretty much have to. You can lower it enough to slide it back but you need to pull the flex plate and put it on the converter you are using then mark one of the holes with paint or something you can see. Preferably marking the bottom hole so you can see it when you stab the trans back in. It only lines up one way.
 
When installing a new converter that step is a waste of time.
The proper thing to do is line up the new converter with the flex plate & mark them. The converter lugs & the flex plate holes have an offset that you need to account for. I line my converter up with the flex plate and mark each. Then when I'm laying on my back putting the converter bolts in they line up.
 
make sure you Seat the convertor too<<
as in,keep spinning it as you insert the vertor onto the shaft.
youll Feel it lock in,then slide in and lock in again for the pump drive.
if it looks like the vertors not far enough in,it Probably Isnt!!
keep spinning and pushing inwards same time.

when the vertors all the way in,you can spin it either direction and Feel the pump drive clicking.
Dont forget this step.
and hey fill the vertor First as much as you can.
 
Getting the converter all the way engaged is critical. Look into the pump housing before putting the converter on the input shaft to get an idea of where the pump lugs are. Usually you feel the first and second set of spines engage then when the slots line up with the pump lugs, you can feel it and usually hear a "thud". The converter hub should be well inside the bellhousing mounting surface.
 
From memory I think the converter is about 1/2 inch inset from the front edge of the bellhousing when fully engaged (the front of the converter or ring gear - not the hub). When the transmission is in place you're hoping there is around 1/8 inch clearance between the flex plate and converter so it doesn't have to be pulled further forward than that to bolt up.

But - you probably know all of this already.

No need to pull the flex plate.Spray paint a vert lug so there is paint on the vert & flexplate.
 
I installed my converter with the transmission horizontal without any issue. But, I used a screwdriver to align the pump lugs in a vertical position so I could just slip the converter on with it's hub notches also vertical. It just slid on in practically one motion.
 
One important point that's been missed is make damn sure your new converter matches up to your flex plate!!! There are two different sizes, as I learned the hard way. I tried to mount a 10" converter on an 11" flex plate after spending hours getting the trans in place. :(
