Have the rear axle off the car as part of teardown.

What can I do with it while its out?

I figured at the very least, remove center section for inspection and change fluid.

Do you guys suggest pulling the axle shafts and rebuilding with new bearings, seals, etc since its out or just leave it alone (if it aint broke....)?

Thanks

I also just pulled the 8 3/4 out of the 65 coronet im doing.
I pulled the baking plates and axles then stuffed some rages in the open ends after draining the old lube and sent it out to be sand blasted.
When I get the rear end, backing plates and drums back I plan on shooting them with PPG's DP90 and replacing all of the old brake hardware.
There's nothing prettier than a nice rear end!:icon_butt:
Id also check the Axle bearings, if it needs them replace them.

Definitely replace the seals. I would just regrease the wheel bearings if they look and spin ok.

Keep in mind the end plates and adjuster kit is no longer available for the 8.75" so try not to destroy that stuff when removing the bearings. The bearings and seals are available separately. There is a skinny seal in each plate that holds the grease in and keeps it from getting into the brakes but you have to remove (destroy) the old bearings to change them. Best to have all new stuff on hand and start fresh. Also remember the bearings have to be packed with grease before pressing onto the axle.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies.

Turns out while I was deciding which rebuild kit to get, I ran into a guy here locally that was selling his Dana 60, newly rebuilt, 4.10 suregrip, with new brakes. So after some negotiating...I have a Dana!
Is it overkill in my car? probably....
Do I care? not one bit....LOL.

So Im going to be selling off my 8.75, 3.23 SG, 742 pumpkin.
