Am i crazy (Driving 69 Satellite from Kentucky to Oregon)?

ok here's what we know it starts and runs let me tell you a couple of my experiences with that iv bought a lot of old mopars take the last one it had new brakes all way around and when they tightened the front wheel bearings they didn't back it off a 1/4 turn and I would have smoked those before I got the 80 miles home ,two I bought a 70 charger cheap because when they had it tuned up with all new parts nobody put a dab of grease on the lobe for the points awesome buy there for me anyway , three had the fluid changed in the trans and 50 miles later it dumps all the fluid out on the ground while driving because the dirty old fluid was helping the dry old seals in the trans hold the fluid in ,4 its no fun stopping every 75 miles to clean out the fuel filters with a rusty old tank ,5 wondering if the pinion bearings going to make it home, it did but the housing was ruined from the bearing race spinning, just a few problems of many I’ve ran into
 
Most shippers are brokers for a third party that does the hauling. It might even be shared hauling between two individuals since your distance is long. You basically are working with a scheduler and you get what he can find on the calender for the lowest cost to the broker.
Big dollar shippers like Reliable are different in that their employees do the loading and hauling.
 
While I would not hesitate to make that trip in my 73 Satellite, I don't think I would do it in a decades old car I was not familiar with.

I did drive my Satellite home about 60 miles from the PO's house.

.....though the entire diameter of tropical storm sandy.

The test drive went fine although the brakes were a bit spongy.

As I got under way, it begat to rain. That's when I noticed the wipers didn't work.

...nor did the defogger.

Stopped at a CVS and bought Rain-X.

That's when I noticed the brake pedal go to the floor.

Went back in and bought brake fluid.

Only had to stop twice on the way home to fill the reservoir.

Exactly...My 73 Charger is my daily driver...I put almost 200 miles on it Monday... I drive it no less than 60 miles a day… I bought it to drive it not to keep it in the garage… All new suspension and all new brakes and it has no problem on the highway around here keeping Up/passing any of the other traffic… It’s already got a beat up Bondo body… why wouldn’t I drive it? Ha ha Ha aside from getting around 12 miles a gallon…
 
If you drive it back, something else to ponder. Overnight hotel stays, where a 69B body might attract some attention.?. Trailered a 70RR shell from the People's Republik to Georgia many moons ago. In the shell, and the bed of my pickup, were all the parts. No way I could leave that stuff unattended, so ended up sleeping at truck rest stops. I'd pull in between two 18 wheelers to be hidden from the freeway and catch a nap. Also, make sure you stay on the southern route. On that same trip, I drove through Flagstaff AZ in Feb. Freeway was ice, had to pull off ... yup ... at the rest stop.

My recent experience.

I bought a car this past Oct. I gave serious thoughts to drive it from Cincinnati Ohio to Tucson AZ. right at 1950 miles one way

Car is a 1966 Satellite, Hemi auto. I dreamt about the experience it would provide for the rest of my life.
Former owner is a very good friend of mine ,, and I actually helped during the restoration back in the early 2000s . So I know the car well.

It came down to primarily my peace of mind . Fear of the car sitting in a hotel parking lot several nites and costs ( this car LOVES gas )
I figured with costs , add in lack of sleep for 4 nites or more, the possibility of something going wrong along long stretches of hiway with no one for miles and miles. It pretty much told me I would be much better shipping it.
So I called Passport Transport and never looked back. To say i was completely happy with the experience is an understatement. I would use them again without ever contacting anyone else .

I booked the haul on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. They picked it up the following Tuesday and I had the car at my house 5 days later. Cost me $1,880 total door to door.

It traveled with some very good company, the 427 Cobra under it , was real.

I was also going to ask where. I live in Pasco Washington (southeastern part of the state) and am very familiar with that part of Oregon. Have friends who live in Milton Freewater. Love the Wallowa lake area.
 
I don't know how I missed this topic all week? I have a buddy that bought a 68-300 in S.J. CA. when I lived near Sac. He flew out and drove to my place as a shakedown for a long trip to Springfield IL. a 2K+ trip. It overheated as he pulled in town about 200 miles from the shakedown, we spent 3 days going over everything and I had the luxury of using the A.F. base hobby shops lift for a couple other small jobs. Flushed radiator, oil change, plugs, install Pertronix, filters, tune & tweak, brake fluid flush & adjust brakes, install cruse control, top off rear end juice. He got 20 MPG's in a 440 for most of the trip and it drove great.
I, myself bought a 66 Rambler American in 81 that was a driver but needed some work so I could go from Fresno to Rapid City S.D. I had it for about a month before my trip and did everything to prep it before hand. Way up on the Great Divide in WY. and got hit in a snow storm, guess what? Heater/defroster don't work, blower works just no heat. I roughed it to Rapid City only to find out that the heater core was plugged. Did a flush & back flush of the core, you wouldn't believe the amount of rust and crap came out of the core. No leaks either. If you can wait for better weather, it will make life better if your not broken down in cold, shitty weather. Good Luck

Thanks for the stories. I just found out the heater hoses have been bypassed so must be a leaky heater core. Probably have to postpone the drive for a couple months if i can wait that long.
 
Just had a car hauled from marana Arizona to Gardnerville Nevada 960$ otherwise i would have to drive 26 hours straight and loose money from work i wanted to but i would lose more then i gain.
 
Not a crazy idea at all. Make sure it doesn't have any fast leaks (trans, radiator), check oil, check gas tank, check brake fluid, and make sure the tires are good and not cracked. If you can lift it, check wheel bearings.

I flew out to Albuquerque and drove a 62 Belvedere back to Kentucky sight unseen.
