I just got my 2 barrel carb back form Custom Carburetor Rebuilder in Middlesex NJ. They were very good and the turn around time was under a week. Now i understood the carb was suppose to be tested. They even told me it was adjusted. It had something in it as it squirted liquid when i pumped it. It smelt like WD 40, was not gasoline
I installed it and it seemed ok but have not really got into adjusting it. At first it was idling so slow i was amazed it didn't stall. There was no hesitation when i gave it half throttle.
Still with the car in gear i feel for a stock 383 it could run smoother. I dont expect to feel anything in the steering wheel when its in gear and my foot is on the brake. I realize it could be other factors. Tomorrow i will warm it up and check timing and adjust the carb. Any thoughts on how smooth you think this engine could be?

Hmm,
Steve, is it a Carter or Rochester?
In my opinion, it seems as though were under the impression the Carb was Bench Tested or Pre-Run but not with WD40 in it.
That is strange to me.
And yes, it should run smooth unless there is a Vacuum Leak and the LOW idle could very well point to that, a Vacuum leak.

Funny, I had a set of Holleys "done up" for my Hemi on that Dyno Run by a very reliable Carb team here in Fontana/Riverside CA back in 2003
When we ran the Hemi on the Dyno, the REAR Holley leaked.
Turns out, after they ran them on their Test Mule 454, they took them apart to readjust blow float and forgot to install a spring
They were Cool about it, I had to remove the Rear Carb off the Dyno and bring it to them for a new spring.
Stuff does happen but it shouldn't sometime

Its the Carter B&B. Ive looked for vacuum leaks. As I've learned from just talking to somebody the rebuilder actually does not run the carb. They probably used WD or something else, not gas to check the pump. I have to adjust the carb tomorrow so we'll see how it goes

The Rebuilder probably runs an inert/safe liquid to test, so that when it is shopped back to you, it does not explode during shipping.

Any carb that is installed on a car will require an amount of tuning....whether or not it has been rebuilt.

Yep. At the very least, hook up a vacuum gauge to a constant source of vacuum and adjust for highest, then give it a half turn more rich.
After that, set idle speed desired and run the dang thing. :-)

They have a wet jet, it uses an inert fluid to test all aspects of carburetor function. This equipment simulates the carb running on an engine. You will need to adjust very little from where they left it.

Steve i posted this previously about dentistry charges. Go back up to carb shop around closing time on Friday put 357 in his face and ask him why car won't idle correctly. And it would be in his best interest to correct the problem unless he wants his family to be on the back of a milk carton. Hank Williams call it attitude adjustment. He said it works every time

The car idles but I'm looking to get it better. The carb shop has a great reputation and did do a nice job, very good people to deal with. I will make some adjustments but i suspect with the engine my problems are more involved. Thanks for the advise.

I LOVE IT!

It should be close but you need to set it for your motor. Hook a vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum and tune for highest vacuum and an idle that barely drops when put in gear. You may even need to tweak the timing as your car was tuned to the pre-rebuilt carb.

x2 (or 3...)

The carb place just rebuilds the carb. You just don't slap it on and say " idle" . You make sure you torque the bolts correctly, all linkage is attached correctly, and all hoses connected. THEN, you begin the adjust the carb. If you're not familiar, then reference a manual specific for the carb.
