Anyone have a '70 Charger Finish Panels Restoration Service

Yep I did the same with the one on the Bee, down and dirty and it still looks good to me. View attachment 2016885
I'm deep into sanding it to remove all the pits. I have a couple that seem to deep to sand out. I don't suppose there's a aluminum fill that can be polished?

Luckily, I believe those deeper pits are in areas that get black paint. So I'll fill with some aluminum filler, sand and paint.

@dadsbee

I'm sanding away. The first 2 pics are after a couple hours of sanding with 100 grit. The 2nd two pics are before. Do I keep going - remove all those tiny pits or will they come out during 220, 400, 600 and then polishing (buffer wheels)?

I don't want to go too far, but willing to keep sanding.

I think you have no choice but to keep sanding with 400/600.

WOOAH.. boys. Deep pits, you're not going to get them out with finer paper. The question will be, is there enough material to actually get them out with coarse, or do you have to concede that you're just not gonna get all the pits out, or do you need to give in to liquid filler to fill the pits and then work your way up to polishing?

Is this the shiny portion or paint? You can prime and sand.. prime and sand until it's flush to paint. If it's the 100/200/400/1000/2000 and polish, then you're gonna have to concede and get it the best you can.

I don’t think you will ever get those pits / dings out by sanding without losing the definition and contours of the trim. I wouldn’t go too far. Know when to say when. Once it re-anodized and painted I don’t think you will really notice the pits.

That's what I'm asking. They are already a LOT better then they were. Some are on the shiny part and I think I'll have to be ok with some minor pitting. As Dave said, they're 50 to parts and this one came from Western NY State (lots of salt in the 70s). The ones on the painted areas I can fill or prime/sand/paint.

Thanks,
Ross

I also have an extra one Ross
Thanks Dave. I think I'm going to work on mine a bit and make it as good as I can. We're making plans to stop at Carlisle on our way back from camping in Western NY & PA on July 4th weekend (camp within an hour of Carlisle). That way we can hit Carlise on the Thursday & Friday (without car this year of course)

Who knows, maybe I'll find a better one there or I'll be fine with mine. The panel can be easily changed later.
