When I was wrenching just after HS, I did an oil change on a '50s something GM that had that kind of canister. My boss told me to go in the bathroom for a roll of TP for the filter. I thought he was joking, but nope, that's what I used.

Our 53 Ford Sun liner has that same set up on the flat 8.

I know its an oil filter. Its in my 63 330. Not sure if anyone know what kind of filter cartridge it would use and where to get.

Yep , toilet paper filter , a good filter, just old tech ! If you us it with TP , don’t forget to take the cardboard center out of the TP !
