Thought I posted this somewhere but could not find it (sorry for the repeat).
Have to replace the shifter in my 70 RR (Auto with floor console). Was wondering if anyone has or is using a aftermarket shifter with the stock floor console? If so could you post photos with what make/model of shifter you are using and any problems you might of had installing it.....thanks

Mine was originally a column shift, now has a B&M shifter on the floor

I'm put a B&M Quicksilver in mine but am using a custom console (69 Charger), the console is pretty much the same size as the original. I will mention for me I ditched the factory supplied 5ft cable in favor of a 4ft to keep the cable away from the exhaust. I made an aluminum cover to go over the factory shifter linkage hole and then put a rubber boot to seal it off. I think I might have moved the shifter back from where it is supposed to be so that may not work for yours, just keep it as straight as possible with no sharp bends.

Decided on, purchased and installed a Duncan Motor Sports Shift-R-Arm. Hurst grip is temporary. Have a Custom wood grip being made by idle Hands Woodwork. Oak center with Tiger Maple Grips.......will post a couple photos when completed.

I have the Duncan shifter now too. It's great just don't like exactly how the gate is set up. Love the ratcheting action of the pro matic. Just need to see who else if anyone has done this mod on a factory console automatic! Lol

The photos of the Charger with the Pro Matic 2 that I posted above...the owner had to remove the stock shifter mounting to get the Pro Matic to fit and work correctly....that was the main reason why I went with the Duncan.......am not racing but I just wanted something different. Try doing a search on this forum for a Pro-Matic II conversion....should be able to find the posting and send a PM to that member for more info on the install.

Yeah I think that is what I'm going to have to do as well, not happy about that but I am thinking I can remove it with out destroying it, replacements are weld in any way so if for some reason I do I know It can be replaced.

Kinda looking forward to it. The Duncan gate has loosened up a bit now so not as bad to engage on the fly but a ratchet would be so much nicer.

Looks like the OEM mounts have to come off and a new hole in the tunnel has to be drilled for the cable. If I want to keep it in the console which I do. Got a look at some pics of cable routing, even saw a couple homemade rods so they could use the oem shift rod set up. I am getting some heat shielding for the cable I am seeing if you don't protect it it will melt by the headers.

I am on that forum where the red charger was posted. I PM'd the guy. he was very helpful.

This is his answer to my question about how he did it:

tek,

The shifter only mounted to part of the original floor shifter mounting pads along with modifying the aft shifter mount. It is not connected to the console lid but I did cut away a lot of the bottom of the lid to make room for the new shifter. I have sold that charger and now working on another 68 but this one will have a manual as it is a Bullitt replica
Thanks and good luck!
Pat

The console looks original and is the same height, and yes it was the car version. You will need to make your own black plastic console slide as the new shifter is not the same shape as the round original shifter. it is a easy conversion and worked great!
Thanks
