I have replaced alternator and voltage regulator and problem persists.
Start the car cold and it charges as it should. Increased rpm =increased amps, put a load on and it compensates. But after a few minutes of driving or idling ammeter flips to discharge. Increasing Rpms or electrical load deflects it further. Ammeter "may" occasionally go neutral or slightly positive.
now what? Any ideas?

Check the voltage the regulator sees as it could be a bad connection any where back to ignition switch
as that is what it works on

first need more information on system... And get a mult voltage tester & start at battery & take some reading...

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep working on it. It is a 62 polara. Built police special 383 w two fours.

All better with solid state regulator. Runs a lot better in cool weather too. It used to sound like an old "Johnny Popper" John Deere.
