Best sealant?

So as some of you may know i'm going to rebuild my 383 after the bearing disaster. So i'm watching a youtube rebuilding an 383. And he's using a sealant but what kind is it? What is the best type of sealant between surface and gasket?

And one thing more, the rear crankseal whats the best way to keep it from leaking? Place the seal offset? And the sideseal? Just a bunch of silicone?

What would you do to keep it from leaking?

I used ultra black on mine with great results, zero leaks. I offset my rms by about 1/4" and it worked out perfect.

Not sure of the brand but it looks similar to Indian head gasket product
 
Gotta agree with 'bsb67', kinda like gasgacinch myself. Could also be Indianhead.

Indianhead seems to be the same, or nearly the same as the aviation sealant.

The gasgacinch is different and it seems to be the same as 3M's windshield sealant. A bit more like rubber contact cement. I've used all of them too. I've probably used everything. Just tired of screwing around with cleaning sealant off of stuff. Decided to use nothing and never had a problem, and never looked back.
 
Ultra Grey on water pump, timing cover. Gaskasinch on the intake. Can also use it or Form a gasket on cork oil pan and valve covers to stick it to the pan side.
 
I suspect every sealant known to man will eventually be mentioned here as someone's go to sealant. Good luck
 
I've had really good luck using Superformance gaskets...and I love them especially oil pan. a couple of small dabs of silicone at parting lines of rear seal retainer and timing cover rest of sealing surface is Gasgacinch. no leaks at all, and no worries of a chunk of silicone oozing inwards and breaking off. Check out Superformance gaskets...good stuff in my opinion, not a fan of cork gaskets anymore after using Superformance stuff
 
Though I am not even remotely in their league, even the best engine builders will tell you they have leaks once in a while. Nick from Nick's Garage YouTube channel just said in a recent video he had a rear main seal leak after 3 attempts to seal it.

As for the question, the type of sealant is relative to the job and whether or not a gasket is used.

Did you now you can buy a combination windage tray oil pan gasket with o-rings? If you go this route, make sure you buy the correct one as they make them for stroker and non stroker applications.

I'd like to see those gaskets and I tell everyone to replace rear main seal cast holder and get the new design from legend no more leaks

read the ear main seal stickley over at FBBO
for those lurking rear main seals with align bore always take some work
