To cut, or not to cut.........
*
My old 72 Charger I had, was equipped with the factory radio, so I had my radio i wanted to listen to mounted on the console, this time my Sun Tach will be mounted there. Question is, where to put the radio if not cut the oem spot to fit my old school Alpine. Not in the glove box or in the console glove box is an option, doesn't look like many aesthetically pleasing places left.

it's not a rally dash, but close, 150mph speedo and all gauges, non-tach, non-clock

What is wrong with where it is mounted in the first pic? Easier to move the tach to the A pillar, steering column,or on the dash unless you are going to a stock resto.

I cut the dash on my 73 and didn't think twice about it. Now if it was 100% original I wouldn't have.

Well, as you see in the pic with the blue wheel, that's my dash, I'm installing the non-tach rally dash and console, so not original, I don't like the looks of the radio where you see it on my formerly owned 72. The pic of the dash with the oem radio by itself is not mine but identical without a radio. A-pillar is a possibility for the tach, but still doesn't give me a good location for the radio, might be a non answerable thread as to the limitations of my likes lol.

leaning hard in this direction

Unless you are in love with that Alpine, there are a lot of options for radio head units that are a lot more compact. If you still listen to CD's, obviously they can't get a lot smaller than your Alpine do to the size of the discs. When I was redoing everything on my boat I was amazed how small and powerful some head units have gotten (as long as you aren't playing CD's, cassettes, 8 track tapes, vinyl albums, etc.). The unit I bought was made to mount in a round hole but had a rectangular face. They do make units that are cylindrical with a round face and could possibly be mounted to hang under the dash off to the side of the tach you wanted to mount on the console. Something like this (although I have no first-hand knowledge about this particular unit, just the first one I found on the net).

How about taking your factory radio and updating it to AM FM and Bluetooth and then you can sync your phone up to it when you wanna listen to music

Thanks everybody....but I'm old school, first, familiar with the round radio, have one in my boat, thanks though, great suggestion! I'll be using one of about 3-4 Alpines i have all with some kind of internal amp(mosfet) and or using an old school under dash EQ power booster(yes from the 70-80's era)
I don't use my phone to connect with my radio's bluetooth etc. If I'm driving, not texting talking or fooling with music, other than possible CD change at a red light. Some of my radios don't have CD's

yup yup and yup

I've been collecting the older Alpines for a while now, just never got into what I thought to be not so nice looking radio's with all kinds of power cables and big ole amps, no boom boom here lol

What about something we often did back in the day ? Mount UNDER-DASH, on a slide-out bracket style mount.

I know it was posted no glove box option, but just for someone else who might want to know, here is a photo of the stainless steel glove box liner we fabricated and the radio perched inside my '72 SSP (photo #1). I filled in the hole in the spot for the factory AM radio to make it appear "radio delete" (photo #2). One can't see it in the photo, but behind the steering wheel where the factory radio was originally installed is now filled in solid.
