I recently picked up a 408 stocker. After removing it from the create I started a thorough inspection of the engine. Using my bore scope I noticed piston skirt scratches on some of the cylinder walls. None of them look deeper than the cross hatching pattern. I called manufacturer and they told me it was nothing to worry about. In the last two years I rebuild a 340 and 360 and after a 500 mile break in I seen some very very minor scratches on two the cylinders on the La 360. In my experience of over 40 years of rebuilding engines as a classic car collector there are two causes for this, improper clearances or unsanitary conditions on assembly. I am by no means a guru on rebuilding engines but very precise on my builds and on the 40 or more engines I have built over the past 45 years have never had one fail. In my opinion I don't see this as normal, maybe some very very minor scratches on one or two cylinders but 6 out of eight concerns me somewhat. This engine has less than a 100 miles on it and runs very strong, It dyno at 500.2 hp with 523 on torque. I am very anxious to get it through the break in period and give it a run through the gears. Thinking about asking them warranty it but dam I hate to pull it after all that work. Have few buddies who have bought them without any issues and love them. I didn't mention the manufacturer because they have been very helpful and have a state of the art facility.

Damn, I don't know what to say. They have a good reputation. What does your gut tell you. You've built a lot of motors. If you push them I'm sure they would warranty it.

The thread title gave it away.... :poke:

I am confident that you will have no trouble with the engine as long as you look after it.

Mine is coming up to 8 years old now and still runs strong, blows no smoke and always bring a smile. :)

Given that my engine travelled a good 8,000 miles before it arrived, I am pretty happy still.

Can you catch a nail on those scratch marks? You need a long pinkie finger to get through the plug hole.

My wife might be able to help with that. I was trying to gauge if the scratches are deeper than the cross hatching.

This is normal rub marks due to the rings not being seated yet. The pistons have to move to assemble the engine, thus the rub marks. Just squirt a little oil in each cylinder and rotate the crank a few times to oil the cylinders and rings before firing it up.
