Hello Guys,

I took my 1964 Plymouth Fury wagon out for it's true Maiden voyage on the main highway after working on it the past year and a half. I bought the car that was originally equipped with a 318 Poly and 727 trans. Someone, a long time ago started installing a big block and I assume the 727 trans and drive shaft from the big block. Not sure on the drive shaft. Completed the swap. When I purchased the car the drive shaft was not connected to the rear end. I purchased a ujoint from Autozone and proceeded to "Ease" the car around the neighborhood. After getting the trans rebuilt and installed I did a few more neighborhood drives. Yesterday when I got up the nerve to take it out on the four lane when it shifted from second to third I heard a loud bang and the car shuttered like crazy. I pulled over looked underneath and didn't see anything. I nursed it back to the neighborhood and the vibration continued. Right before I got home I heard a load bang and the delightful "Tingling" sound of the drive shaft on the road. I have attached some pics. I have been reading and it seems I may deed a "Conversion" ujoint any thoughts?

Thanks,
Everitt

Doesn't look like it broke more like the caps had no snap rings inside the straps and they just walked away.
If that was the case it was just improper installation.

Take the straps off the yoke. Measure the inside of the ears. Is it 2.125 or 2.625?

7260 u joint needs c ring clips to secure the bearing cups

They both use clips at the yoke 7260 and 7290.

1330 has tabs on the yoke to center it.

I use 1330s which is snap rings. Lots of combinations

As others have eluded to, Mopar uses C Clips to capture the U joint cup, unlike GM which has tabs made onto the rear yoke... If you don't install the C clips the caps will disappear....

66/67 yokes have tabs for 1330 u-joints.

Thanks guys. I didn't realize you use c- clips on the yoke end. My replacement joint didn't come with c-clips. I'm out of town until Tuesday. I'll take measurements then.

Sorry for your misfortune. You could have damaged the over running clutch by losing the drive shaft. Trans should be pulled and checked cause if you want to hear and see some serious damage you should see when one explodes. You could even lose your foot or leg depending on RPM when it goes. It may suck but it's worth your time.

The overrunning sprag is damaged (Laid over) by an abrupt shock load... Since the driveshaft isn't attached to anything there's no shock load... About zero chance the sprag was damaged...

Wrong when you drop a drive shaft under load and the engine revs up that is when damage can occur. I don’t know if he was on it when it unloaded or doing 10mph…

Here is a list of how it can fail..

1) Driveline failure such as:
-Broken ring and pinion
-Broken u-joint or u-joint straps
-Broken driveshaft
-Broken axle shaft
-If you have a driveline failure, remove the transmission and carefully inspect the case and tail shaft area for cracks. Disasemble the transmission and check the sprag in the back of the transmission case. If it is not damaged, it is recommended to replace the springs and rollers to be on the safe side

Doing a burnout in drive, but the trans is in first gear, and then abruptly letting off the gas is when you take out the sprag.
Because the low band is not applied like manual low.

I was only going maybe 15mph down a slight incline when the ujoint failed. It didn't sound like the engine/ trans revved that high and of course I shut it down immediately. I feel like a DA for not knowing about the C-clips. But again the new one didn't come with any. Did later Mopars eliminate the C-clip?

You should be fine. Most classic mopars use Detroit 7260 (uses c clips for cups and straps to pinion yoke) or 7290 (larger and uses stronger u bolts to yoke). To make it more confusing driveshaft shops you may see Spicer 1310, 1330, or 1350s as well, which use a snap ring at the ends of the bearing cups. 1330 and 7260 are very similar measurement for the cups but the overall dimensions are different. Moog and Spicer make combination u joints for most possible situations, you can find them at local parts house or Mancini racing.

Thanks!! That makes me feel a lot better that I’ve not screwed up my new trans rebuild.

So, today I did some measuring and I have the 7260 joints. I bought another one, installed the C-clips and everything looks good. I'm convinced my problem was because I'm a DA and didn't install C-clips on the other joint. Again, thanks to everyone for chiming in

Naw.....I bet everyone here has done something to make them feel dumb. I know I have and too many times but we do learn from our mistakes.....I hope lol

An easy mistake to make, many of is have done it or seen it done... You fixed it so get out & enjoy the ride...

Back in 1970 a guy loaned me a 3rd member for my car while I had a set of gears installed on mine. At the time, I only had one car and needed it for work. I thought how cool that someone was going to loan one to me. Thing is, he didn't tell me the pinion nut wasn't tight and yup, messed it up. From that time on, I check that kind of stuff lol.
