cam selection for stock 440

I'm simply stating what can be done with a " crappy" smog 440 bottom end. They get **** on without facts.
I found the 528 mopar cam to work great in a low- comp motor(60° overlap). But you need adjustable valve train.

Yes smoggers can be made to run bigger cams and can make respectable power once they get up in the rpms. But the trade off of bottom end power is greater than with a higher compression bottom end. Id recommend a little smaller cam on low compression engines so drive ability is better. I was just going to use factory cam and 1.6 rockers on my dish piston 383. But that plan has changed with the purchase of the 67 440.

The “if it were me” answer is, I wouldn’t be planning on a camshaft upgrade for a build using untouched 50 year old heads.

Plan on a valve job, probably some guides, flat milling, and addressing the guide boss/seal/lift situation, along with an appropriate spring upgrade(based on cam selection).
Figure on $500-1000 depending on just how bad they are, and the labor costs in your area.
