I am looking for some clarity on adusting for a richer fuel mixture in cruising mode.
I read where the factory Tech manual tells you to adjust the metering rods plate (the Screw) clock wise for a richer mixture. Since my 318 has been running lean and surgers a bit after full warm up, The insulator on the plugs has been whitish, instead of a desireable light grey or tan, like the old days with the older non ethanol fuel, should I try this adjustment or change the jets a size up larger?

Thanks

Try a couple more degree’s of timing first? One size up on jetting next.

well the timing is 16 set in the adjustable distributor, 19 degrees with out VA connected 875 rpm at the damper with a digital timeing light, VA connected to the manifold vacuum and 32 degrees VA connected, the plug shows the correct clear spot on the electrode on the curved area, so a larger jet size seems to be in order.
thanks

Went online and there is an adjustment for height setting of metering rods; try raising them up slightly first. Kinda thought there was an adjustment, but it’s been many years, so I didn’t say anything about first post.

yes I am aware of the adjustment it tells you to turn the screw for adjusting clock wise for a richer fuel mixture for cruising , would this take place of larger jets?

Up to a point,yes.
