I just finished rebuilding a Carter 4426 1968 383 4spd carb. Picked up two, one was a A8 all original and complete even dashpot and tag but heavily corroded and stuck shaft. Other was also original and complete K8 and outstanding shape.
What I found interesting when I went to the Carter Tech page on this carb is that 2 different Accelerator pumps where used. A Carter 64-212 for all the auto versions 340/383/440 and 64-279 for just the Manual carbs 340/383/440. Turns out there is a difference in pump shaft construction that one has a short delay build in and therefor a shorter duration shot, and no percolator check valve in the stem. The 69 carbs all used the same pump regardless of Auto or manual.
The problem is finding the correct kit. Seems like the later manufacture normalized the kit and use the same pump regardless of auto or manual carb (plus they did not keep carter numbering nomenclature). Carter calls out two different kits. Granted they are the same dia and about same length pump. Even many of the carb sites do not distinguish this difference in there data on pumps by carb number.
In the picture you can see how the plunger gap is much smaller in the manual trans version despite the rest of the characteristic being the same (other than the added perc valve). Wondering if there is a performance difference that can be seen/felt between the two types.
