So what drove the selection of either a 904 or 727 on B Bodies in 1968? My 318 Coronet has a 904 but I see people selling (claimed) 727's out of 318 cars? Why the different transmissions in these cars?

I would disagree with them Jim. If a 318 had a 727, it came in a truck. A 340 would have a 727, and big blocks too.

I don't know about 1968, but in 1972 police/taxi used the 727 with the 318 V-8 and even (hard to believe) 225 slant six.

Good point there likely were special cases where a 727 may have been used....

Thanks

A 727 could be found small block police cars to I also have seen one pulled from a early seventy"s dry with a slant 6 it was a Taxi .

Checking the box for HD service towing package got you a 727, and a 26" radiator, 11" brakes, and a 60 amp alternator. And A bonus HD flasher!- all for a pittance. And yes, even on a /6.

I had a 727 in a 4 door 66 Coronet with a 318 as my first car in the 70s. But I recall it also had a tow hitch when I got it my mom got another car she was the second owner though.

Pretty sure poly 318s got a 727.

My 67 Coronet LA 318 also had one.

Was 68 the first year for the 904?

As far as I know 'dibbons' has it correct.

My 66 Belvedere came with the poly teen and 727. The car had the 'deluxe' interior, PS, AC while my 66 Bel with the /6 and AC came with the 904 but there wasn't anything heavy duty about that one. IIRC, the 273 cars came with the 904 too...

Yeah Cranky and I have no idea what the 'RG' designation means on the /6, unless it's different bellhousing(?)

Well, the /6 with a 727 is going to be somewhat rare but they are out there....

Cranky, lol. Never worried about taxi's drivetrain; but I never was up close to a /6 police car!! Guess they were out there, somewhere....
