I am rebuilding a 1968 383 and I am having trouble choosing the right 4-barrel carburetor. I would like to have good fuel efficiency but still give some power. I would favor fuel efficiency slightly more.
I've never tried one yet, but might be a contender, a Demon "Spread bore" style 625cfm Street Demon w/vac. sec. & w/electric choke... or even the tried & true Holley Spread Bore 650cfm style carburetors, both style carbs have smaller primaries & larger secondaries for better mileage & then performance when you mash the throttle down... or maybe a Quickfuel 600cfm vac. sec. SL-600-VS or SS-680-VS QFT vac. sec. series of carbs... all good possibilities... check either sites
I like the TQ's a lot but if your not really into carbs much, hunting down spare rods and jets is a royal bitch. Core carbs are your source. Once you get a good one (part of the problem with these old things) it'll take some time to get it right. Once there, there great.
But I'm betting on your intake is a square ore carb, not a spread bore like a TQ or the QJ.
Otherwise, for a new carb, that above posted Demon or similar sized Edel. AVS would do it. Mileage is in the state of tune. Carb and distributor. A nice booster for mileage once you dial everything in at its best is a MSD or equal multi sparking unit.
...two years ago I bought a Q-Jet from Cliff Ruggles.... ( www.cliffshighperformance.com) he is the man. Payed @ 500 USD ...but well worth every penny. The Carb was better than a new one.... for sure.
If you call him.... tell him what ´s your current set up.... and he will build a carb that matches your engine
