Damper bolt torque

Any ideas on how to keep a 440 from turning when torquing the damper bolt? The engine is in the car and it has a 727. Would it be ok to use a piston stop that screws into the spark plug hole?
 
I'm not sure about useing a piston stop. Might damage the top of the piston.

I'm thinking a deep well socket (impact is a stronger socket) on one of the torque converter bolts and let it stop against the block. Might have to have someone hold it in place while you torque the dampner bolt. Just a thought...

Agreed. If you have an impact, you should be able to spin it off without holding anything
 
Piston stop??....No Way!

Unless you want to damage your piston....

I purchased a tool from mancini that holds the crank from turning.....it is in the tool section on their website....
 
A piece of rope fed through the spark plug hole works like a champ. Just put a bunch in withe the piston at bottom.
 
There are proper tools designed to hold the ring gear. The torque of the crank bolt far exceeds the strength of a converter bolt if you do it that way be careful.
I bought one 25 years ago and have used it many times.
 
Do you have access to an impact gun and have the room to get in there with it? I generally use a good one and put a dab of red loc-tite on the bolt. Never had a problem doing it that way.
 
I've designed a bunch of different tools that tackle that job. Some bolt to the damper, some to the crankshaft, etc. Just depends on the situation. Here is a link: http://arengineering.com/home-page/tools/

This is what I was gonna suggest. I just used my Damper holding tool the other day to torque the damper on a 383 to 135#. It worked perfectly. Thank you Andy! HTH, Lefty71

I cut a 2x4 into a wedge shape and wedged into the flywheel/bell housing on the right side of the engine. The ring gear teeth bit in and she wasn't going anywhere. No risk of damage to steel parts.
