This is the damper on a 73' 340 engine. My question is: Just how much can be worn before it needs to be replaced. Looks like just the outer edge about a 1/4 of the way around, but some of you out there know these engines inside and out and can give an educated answer. Thanks in advance.

The chamfer is correct, but new balancers will have a chamfer that is a lot smaller. They will also not have the tin dust shield, unless you get an old Australian made balancer. The Power Bond SBM, internal balanced model is PB1004N for OEM, PB1004ST for Street Performance, and PB1004SS for a SFI balancer. The hub looks ok (not a large seal groove), but the rubber has/is deteriorating. Get a new balancer, and swap over the dust shield, and you will be good to go.

You should be able to put on a speedy sleeve and have a new seal surface. Provided the rubber layer is in good shape.

I would replace that damper. The elastomer has deteriorated and is cracked on the outside edge. If it's not a high performance build replace it with another elastomer type damper for your application. 440'

Definitely a good option.

I would be very surprised if that did not seal perfectly fine as is.
