.023 Is best for thin metals. I turn it up hot enough to burn through on a continous weld. Then with short bursts the tacks lay down flatter. Work slow and cool often. The time spent welding and grinding slowly will more than offset the time spent fixing burn thru's and warpage.

You absolutely need the trim on hand. You' want to cut that patch panel down a bit because a smaller patch panel equals a shorter weld required. That looks like a nice patch panel and your car looks pretty darn solid too so it should go as well as it can.
