That is what tires are made out of now, blended with actual rubber sometimes. Belts and hoses too.
Basically, plastic.
Plastic does not play nice with UV or temperature changes.
Changes in wear rate are most likely due to age and the amount of EPDM used in manufacture, along with number of hot/cold cycles and what the actual outside temperature operating range is where you live.
They can make snow tires that stay nice and soft at 10 below (F, cause this is 'Merica) and then burn off during the summer because they get too hot.
They can control this by changing the grade of material they use. Some tires might like high temp, some cold, and some people like me live where it is both a mere few months apart every year.
It is cheaper to make tires this way, natural rubber is expensive now the trees all burned 25 years ago.
the "E" and "P" in EPDM are both byproducts of refining gasoline. They are used in a host of materials in manufacturing. They used to use Neoprene. My guess is they found this stuff was more abundant and cheaper once they figured out a chemistry method to use it to make "rubber".

I truly do not know the answer to this. A yes and a no could both be possible.
It just seems weird that I was driving the car for over 6 years and didn't notice much wear, then within a few months the tread grooves on the outer and inner edges just faded away.
A tire company engineer should have some insight.
