Hello All, I have a 68 RR with a 440 in it. When I bought the car, the engine was bolted right to the frame, no engine mounts. I had a local guy here cut out the garbage and weld in new supports with after market engine mounts. I went to a car show yesterday and one of my friends noticed my engine was not straight. It appears the engine has a slight downward angle with a tilt to the passenger side.

Question: With the geometry being off in this matter, will it have an affect on other components like tranny, driveshaft, rear-end? Will these things wear out a lot quicker?

Is the transmission mount in a bind.....drive shaft angle correct.....any vibrations? Who assembled the components?
 
I guess the short answer is, if the drive shaft does not cause vibration at speed, then it's close enough.

Not sure you can get it "off angle horizontally to cause any problems. Vertical change, you can compensate with shims under the rear axle.

The short answer on pinion to transmission angle is that under full acceleration, with normal car loading, you want the pinion and the transmission centerline parallel. This implies, that at rest, the pinion should point a little bit downwards in relation to the transmission shaft centerline, 2 1/2 degrees (at rest) is a popular bandied about figure.

Google pinion angle, but keep this in mind: Guys get all "complicated" but the simple equation is the relation of the pinion shaft to the transmission shaft, PERIOD.

Below is simplest I know how to make it. "Under acceleration" both shafts are parallel

Pretty much what 440 Roadrunner has said but I'd add that the pinion pointed down 2 1/2 degrees isn't always true. I fought with mine for a while and didn't eliminate the vibration until I matched the angles.

It's common for almost all trannies to point downward a certain degree usually within 3 degrees. Left to right tilt shouldn't hurt, it would have to be off a lot to cause any oil drain back issues or float level issues in the carb.

If it's not vibrating while acceleration, slowing or cruising then your likely alright.
 
guys, thanks for the info. I do get a vibration thru the steering wheel but at this point Im not sure if it is suspension related or the driveshaft. I plan on having the entire front suspension rebuilt and disc brakes put in around april/may. When I first got the car, you could not drive it 30mph w/o your teeth vibrating out. The driveshaft was wobbly so I had it balanced. That was before I had the motor mounts installed. It seems to roll pretty good now but I do get a vibration from the front.

I placed a level on top of the air cleaner, looks to be level with the ground but when you look down at it from the top and compare it to the radiator, it does seem off. My friend pointed out that you can get 2 fingers between the blade and radiator on the top and 1 finger at the bottom.
