Fan belt rant

tried the new Gates AC belts today. The squeal is still there.

I ordered a Gates belt for the power steering pump. Fingers crossed.
Seems like you've tried a lot of stuff. What are the odds theres an underlying cause that's not belts going on here??.. My ford van has been burning power steering fliud for years and i just ignore it. Could your pump be the real issue??

I can't rule it out, yet.

Another issue that enables squeaks is not having the accessories lined up. Its beneficial to spend some time with a straight edge and add washers/shorten spacers/tweak brackets etc to get all the players lined up.
That will also prevent flipping belts when the loud pedal is mashed.

Ask me how I know. Radiators are spendy to repair.

The pulleys on my engine were aligned in accordance with BPE's installation instructions and checked with a straight edge.

They mentioned belt squeal might be a momentary issue on start up until the water pump starts spinning but most poeple don't experience that.

Gates has gone the way of Moog. As in, selling a name for max profit while they run it into the ground. Like about everything nowdays, they used to be rubber, then rubber/synthetic blends, and now basically mostly EPDM and the like. Turns out natural rubber as better at basically everything than neoprene, at least for what we are looking for.

I haven't had to buy anything but a serpentine for a while, knock on wood. I would recommend, if you know the length, to look at heavy duty farm implement like John Deere dealerships or possibly industrial like at McMaster-Carr. Last time I bought a JD belt it was rubber, and solid. But that was 11 years ago, so all bets are off.

The serpentine belt I bought was a Gates for my 98 Dakota. Last year, to replace the factory original that was showing a few cracks on the rib side. I kept the original in my toolbox. The new belt was F'ing navy blue with a purple-ish tint on the rib side, felt grainy right out of the carboard sleeve, and I half expect it to disintegrate in 2 years. Gates quality! I will not be a loyal customer anymore to that name, just like Moog. No point.

Belts.
The water pump on my boat motor is about one eight out of alignment. No problems.
The alternator belt on my boat slips. New Chinese.
A used US made belt fixed the problem.
The alternator belt on my 318 slips when the revs are increased quickly. Probably Chinese made junk. Or I can run the belts too tight, which I do not.
The belt on my 41 Ford tractor, and my 53 Bentley, were and are, about one inch wide at the thick part. They can run quite loose without a problem.
My conclusion, thin and crappy belts, that will slip unless they are over tightened.

I went through this website when looking for matched belts for my ac on the coronet. Www.vebeltsupply.com
They sell matched sets of belts really cheaply. I had to order a couple different sizes til I found what worked, but they have lasted 3 years even with my rusted up pulleys. I have an extra set in the trunk just in case. I will put those on with the new pulleys when I rebuild the engine this winter.
Link no worky.

This is the water pump belt I’m running. I wanted Goodyear brand to keep ac delco off the car, but this was in stock that day. Also the starter has held up so far, so…score some points for the brand x guys.

My experience has been the simpler the better.
Unfortunately I might have to add power steering (which I hope I don’t have to, and our hot temperature trips south of the 49th since 1970, we lived it like some did at that time.
Our last several years trips involved driving from about 8:00am-2:00pm. Retired and took most State highways to get a feel. Bonus was getting thumbs up and sometimes locals coming over at fuel stations to chat.Questions like you are driving over 1000 miles to a car show? And couple of trips we just happened on a local car show in a small town. They were good.
Great times. Hope I have another opportunity to a large Mopar Meet.
I hope I haven’t digressed from the main subject.

Yes it does. Just type it in if you have to.
