Fan clutch ro rad clearance

Working on a 64 Polara with a 383, Torqueflite, factory air, and fan clutch. Fan clutch has no wiggle and turns freely. The fan clutch has been in contact with the radiator core. Currently has about 1/4" gap between the core and clutch. Distance from water pump hub to front edge for fan clutch is 2-3/4". Anybody have and info on either of these measurements, and what they should be. Thanks

1/4" isn't enough room. Remember that your motor moves when you give it gas. I think 3/4" should be the bare minimum of space and I run solid motor mounts at that.

There is a shorter fan clutch available. I haven't paid enough attention to know the part#, but I believe it's a Jaguar oe. (I don't use the fan clutch, or I'd know the part#).. Hayden?

If your clutch unit is 2 3/4", the short hayden clutch won't help much, if at all.

Look for a Torqflo 922765 Jaguar fan clutch

Not only that, it’s too large a diameter on the water pump end for a factory fan to bolt into it. I tried that fan clutch last weekend and returned it 2 days ago

I’ve got the same problem. I have two friends that have the clearance fit the clutch fan in. It turns out that their motors sit about 3/8” to 5/8” farther back in the chassis. My car is a 64 Belvedere and the other two cars are a 64 Fury and a 65 Coronet.

I think you need the Hayden 2765 clutch, but that's going off my crusty memory. Check your dimensions, and the dimensions of any clutch considered for replacement.

This seems to usually be a radiator problem, at least that's true on my cars. Aftermarket aluminum radiators.
