FBBO cumulative years of Mopar knowledge, experience, passion - Post up your time

Loved them since 6 yrs old. Worked on them since 1964. Owned many of them since 1970 , so what was the question ?? 54 yrs and counting. Professionally 44 years.

Hey guys I thought it would be interesting to tally up how many years of Mopar knowledge, experience , loving, driving, and working on our favorite breed of cars there is in our combined membership ranks. I'll post up an occasional tally along the way and don't worry about the number ... Just post it up :). If I should mod the idea PM me and I'll change it up if it's dumb idea I'll let is die.

I'll start .. 33, like our new young gun member Bobby, I started chasing a Mopar of my own when I was 15, but it took me a little longer. I was 16 when I got my first and have loved them ever since. I've worked on them off and on over the past 30 plus years but even when i was overseas and couldn't take the cars with me I read and kept up on the hobby and dreamed about them.

How about you?
great addition to the site. I'll be posting my mopars.here, alas not many pictures- it didn't seen necessary at the time I was driving them.

40 plus years but the last year has been the best as I'm building my dream car. 1964 440 and with all the ideas and help from all the members on this forum I plan to a have a nice ride and do the mopar nation proud. I started at 16 with a 64 polar 500 with a 383 and 4 speed the car would run 13 at the track well that wasn't fast enough so I built it faster and 11's was as fast as it would go. Well life got in the way and sold it. As time went on 69 440 4 speed came into my life then 65 fury then a 72 a body a 69 charger. I have other street cars but no matter what I did they just couldn't make the sound of a bb mopar so here I am collecting parts for the new dream.

53 yrs & still counting. 50 with the avatar! Dad had a ‘63 Fury, but I was a pure amateur then!

Since about 1967-8. Sox & Martin were my favorites at the SoCal drag strips.
The only time I got in trouble for a temper tantrum as a child was back then when my aunt & uncle gave me a model of some early 60s Ford instead of a MOPAR. I was only mildly placated when they assured me it was the kind my uncle raced...
I wasn't a spoiled brat, I just REALLY knew at that young age it was MOPAR or no car!

I have been a Mopar only fan/racer since 1962- when I became aware of the SS 413's, I ordered a '63 SS 426 Plymouth,March '63, got it April 26 and thats been it for me ever since. I should point out having never driven a car with that mush power before- and it was my only street/racecar , as it was an auto trans car the salesman who had sold a prior '63 stick shift asked if he could go for a ride and see what the auto trans was like- sure.-as I left the dealer and touched the throttle I spun a 360 in front of the show room he said "thats far enough" got out ,walked some 60 feet back to the dealership. (55 years Mopar fanatic), the '64 Dodge 330 post sedan I bought arrived last night. 383/auto. duel pipes, sure grip, clean, straight.

My Mopar itch started around 1986 when I was about 13 years old because of a friend and his dad. In 1990 I bought a 1985 Omni GLH-T that I raced all over town. Despite having a bad syncro for 1-2 it was a great car until it was rear ended and totaled. The only picture I had of it was after the wreck. I never did much to it other than add a stereo and some speakers.

With insurance money in hand I finally bought an old Mopar of my own in 1991. It was a 1968 Charger H code 383 auto. It was orange with black interior and top. I worked on it non stop with what little $ I had. This is where I first learned to work on cars which was also before the internet so information came from local enthusiasts and service manuals. It ran pretty good but the cowl and rear window were rusted through so it was a wet mess whenever it rained or snowed. I sold it a year later for $3000 as i didn't have the time or money to put into fixing the body. Living in Ky where it rained all the time was the deciding factor.

During the time when I turned 16, my daily driver was my Dad's 1979 Volare station wagon. He drove this out of the showroom brand new back when Chrysler was hurting. He had his daily driver so this was technically mine as my sister didn't want anything to do with it. It was the perfect high school ride for fishing and camping trips. I rebuilt the head once to reverse the effects of not changing the oil and leaky valve seals. I also rebuilt the BBD a few times to keep it running. It finally got sent to the boneyard when the front frame rails rotted through along with the brake lines. This is the thick, crusty rust known throughout the salt belt. I drove it for 2 years with a broke leaf spring because the bolts were a solid chunk of rust.

My next, and longest running car, was a 1987 Shelby GLHS. This little monster lasted some 250k miles and took me through college and grad school before it finally died from rot and a holed piston (1992 to 2012 RIP). I did everything to this car including an engine swap after I dropped a valve in the original motor, rebuilt the transaxle and finally replaced the A525 with an A523 cable shift. New head, exhaust, BOV, injectors, turbo, etc. I did everything to this car on my own.

While I was still driving the Shelby, my Mom and I bought her cousins 1962 Belvedere for $1000. This was around 2004. This car was good enough to scratch the itch of wanting another Mopar during a time when 2 doors were going for stupid money (still are! lol). Didn't do too much to it until I brought it out to AZ with me, where I took it apart and rebuilt the motor, trans and did some body work and paint to get it looking good again.

Then I finally got back into the two door game in 2016 when i purchased my 1969 GTX, complete rebuild thread in the project forums.

50 years and counting......
Oh, I came home in a 53 Chrysler when I was born. If that counts, 61 then.

I can definitively point to the exact experience that made me a MOPAR fan.
1969, at 7 years old. Riding in the back seat of the new 69 383 auto Roadrunner my LEO dad had bought, he was driving and my mom was in the front seat.
A guy passes us on the interstate speeding and my dad catches him about a mile away. :)
Fast forward to 1978 and the start of my senior year of high school. I'm 16 and I find a bone stock 71 Charger R/T. 440 auto, open 8 3/4 rear. 54,000 miles. $1,700 and a new set of points and plug wires and she was good to go! I changed out the starter motor on my back in the street using the curb to get the front wheels up high enough for me to get under it. By Easter break of 79 I was changing out the head gaskets because I blew one playing with a Porche on the interstate heading to LaPlace for a day of 1320 racing. By the fall of 79 I had set my heart on a 1979 R/T because my Charger was my only car and not as reliable as I needed (or could maintain).
Turns out the lean burn system on the
"E-58 option" police pursuit 360 sucked for "reliability" too.
I love my 70 V-Code 3 pedal Roadrunner I have now. WAY WAY faster than the 71 Charger and I can do what I want with it performance wise (as my budget allows).
My daily driver AND work vehicle? 2017 DODGE Caravan! (The V-6 powered van is probably almost as fast as my stock 79 R/T was)
Here's my old Charger R/T:

This is what my 79 R/T looked like:
