In late summer 1951, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway ran its first diesel-powered locomotives through Richmond on two of its passenger trains. Here, train engineer Mr. Denton got orders from stationmaster Mr. Boykin. By the end of the year, the company hoped to have most of the steam locomotives in its line replaced with diesel-electric ones.

Wearing derbies, fancy vests while carrying canes, they were responsible for distributing schedules and brochures as well as promoting the comfort and convenience of rail travel to the public.

It's 440,000 pounds! I'd like to see that rotisserie...heh. Actually the coal dumpers would do it. I know you're joking. But the frame would all be painted black before the body is set down on it.

This is what happens when a locomotive is caught in a dumper...designed to flip coal gondolas over to quickly empty them. (This was in Prince Rupert).

So, if you ever wondered what the traction motors look like.... You can see the wheels, and the axle between them. The flat box next to the bottom wheels is a cover for a large gear which is driven by the electric motor to the left of it. Those are 600 volt power lines near the left axle. That flat bottomed bathtub farther forward is the 3,500 gallon fuel tank.

Yes, that's a lot of fuel, but railroads deal in huge hauling weights and are quite efficient. That new GE locomotive shown previously for example, when the fuel/load ratios are looked at it can haul a ton of freight 500 miles on one gallon of diesel fuel.

An unusual car for unusual cargo, this white train is led by TSSX G33 which is an armed guard escort car, there is another one at the tail end. Now retired and in a museum, the train loads were secret, sensitive and military; also called 'the atomic train', they often carried nuclear weapons from different parts of the country to the Department of Energy's secure facility in Pantex, Texas.
