I haven't read this post but maybe you guys know the answer to this. When you see the trains in the WWII movies the German trains have this weird cladding on the sides of the locomotives. What is that about?

Those are smoke deflectors, to change the airflow and direct fumes away from the driver's cab. They were used in many countries, not just Germany.
