Hi Just thought I'd mention that the Interlake dragstrip that is part of the Gimli Motorsports park is closing up , I'm most certainly disapointed as I now have my car finished and will have no place to go!!! For more info

That's the shits. I got to race there once, nice community. You know Rich Bedford? He does some of our photography at SIR.

Has anyone heard of the "Gimli Glider" event. An out-of-fuel jetliner landed there during a drag race. The pilot knew of the disused former airstrip, and knew it was the only place in the area where he could "dead-stick" his airliner. The fuel shortage was caused by early conversion mistake of litres vs. gallons. I read about the incident in Readers Digest.

SDRA has a recently re paved track. Ask some of the Manitoba racers about it. Saskatchewan racers had competed in Gimli, our son being one.

Thanks....I'll have to do some tree shaking and see if DRAM (Drag racing association of Manitoba) has more news etc. I haven't done any of that yet!
It's just that over the years the Gimli Dragstrip was like a bouncing ball when it came to owners ... For the last number of years it was stable and
was kept in good repair and all that.

Don’t know how old you are. My relative Doug Doucette did a lot of racing at that track a long time ago.

There were a few racers that came to the track from Manitoba for racing. Especially for the Kambusters sponsored race. Go to SIR and surf.

That's sad, I've never raced there, but when any track closes down
it's a sad day for the surrounding area that also makes
part of a living off it too, parts stores & liquor stores, hotels, even camp grounds
gas stations, restaurants etc...

WE had like IIRC 27+ Racetracks/dragstrips here in Calif.,
when I was a youngster, started going to races in like 1967, I was 8
with my now deceased stepdad Bob
(he died at 88 last Sunday, in a nursing home from a brain tumor, after having several strokes)
He started racing in the 50's like 57 IIRC
he ran Pontiacs mainly, in S/S's from D-H, always a manual trans too,
several years of Judge & GTO's starting at a 64 & gen 1 Firebird 400's,
a couple of Ford 66-67 BB Fairlanes & a 53 f100 truck, all FE powered...

Out here they kept closing them down,
every several (5 maybe) years a couple more were closed

1st that I remember closing was Bob's 2 favorites, Vacaville 1/8th mile,
& then Lions/Long Beach, my 1st race where I saw my 1st AA/FA (I was hooked)
much later Fremont (that closing, broke my heart),
when I was in my later 20's (raced at their last race too),
& most recent is Sacramento (housing/noise encroachments, open since the 50's)
a lot like the newer, like at AAA track in Fontana or newer Irwindale
(both somewhat recently closed)
or LA Co Raceway/Palmdale was, been a while now

my favorites, also
Orange County International Raceway & Ontario Motor Speedway,
2 bigger tracks I never thought would close
both of which were super tracks, oval, road course & drags
I was racing at both their last drag events too, early 80's seemed the death of tracks
along with Riverside, in the 80's that was hard to see/take...

I really liked Oroville too, country setting, was not the best track
but the people were great to me, fun crowds, loved my blown door-slammers & T/S cars
we have like 7 (?) now, none close to me, 2 down south, 1 is 1/8 mile below LA,
& 2 up north Samoa & Redding
& central Ca. valley Bakersfield & by the bay Sears Point/Infinity
(still doing well, as far as I know)
& 1 part time, at Pomona/LA east you can only race on
in a NHRA National event 2 times a year
w/no street cars classes

had 26 racecars to date, here's a few
sorry the crappy photos
