Freeze plug

I have to replace a freeze plug and I have a question: the replacement one I have is the correct diameter but it's depth is slightly more than the plug it is replacing. I'm not sure the edge will sit flush with the edge of the hole in the block. It's a 318 and the hole is passenger side, closest to the transmission. Would it be bad if the edge is slightly above the block surface?

Should not be a problem.I now put a bead of "the right stuff" around the sealing surface for insurance.

Deeper is better, as the shallow ones tend to cock and possibly seal properly.

Agree. Deeper is better. Plus, the shallow ones can create a ledge on the inside, where crud can accumulate.
