what would cause the tranny to shift at 4500 wot most of the time and won't downshift at a higher rpm but the weird part is every once and a while it would upshift at more of a normal 5200 rpms. tranny was rebuilt and the line pressure was turned up a little. kickdown is adjusted all the way.

You could have some leakage in the governor circuit such as poor ring seal or a mechanical issue with the governor itself.
A pressure test would be in order.

Differences in the upshift/downshift rpms sounds like leaking/sticking valves in the trans. If the trans fluid is old, try changing the fluid/filter.

fluid is changed. are saying sticking valves in the valve body ?

Yes. Or warped valve body/case allowing leakage.

Any update? Kim
what timing you have. I have another trans being built this week and he is going to tear the old trans apart to see what was going on with it. the old one would shift at 4500 rpms into 2nd and 3rd unless I put the shifter into 1st gear till say 4000-4500 rpms and upshift to 2nd and then it would shift at 5200 rpms into 2nd gear by itself.

Thanks for the update. Good luck with your trans. Is this a 67 or older tranny? They just did weird **** like that. 68 was much better. I believe the valve body was the culprit. Kim
