I would think a sock is a good idea - stops any larger chunks getting caught up the intake pipe.

Without a sock you are asking for problems.

Maybe the lack of a sock is why we are still waiting on the May Calendar girl???

I replaced the original gas tank on my 66 Charger back in 2010 when I got it. Also replaced fuel lines and filter. Think it still had the original sender. and possibly the original metal cased fuel filter, don't know for sure... Looking back, wish I would have cut both open to document the crap that can collect over 50 years... It was un-believable how much crud was in the bottom of that old tank. If it weren't for the sock still being there, all that crap would eventually cause a blockage in fuel line or filter.
