Just eliminated Lean Burn. Using rebuilt t-quad and chrysler electronic ignition. It is hard to start cold, warm or hot. Idles smooth when I get it running. When starting, I am getting a pop/poof of smoke from carb. So, is it timing, carb, mixture, vacuum advance, bad gas? Help and thanks!:

"poofs"out the carb are timming.check for a bad chain as well.

Anytime I've had back fires through the carburetor, I found advancing the timing some eliminated that. I also did away with the Lean Burn System in my car. I went with an Edelbrock carb because I have used them in the past and they are very easy to work with. I also used a Pertronix distributor and coil. I had to fiddle with the timing some to get it where I wanted it. Start at 10 degrees BTDC and go from there. Your advance curve is probably different than mine due to different distributors. I kept advancing until it pinged and backed off some. Car starts up quickly and idles at about 1000 rpm cold then will drop to about 750 once warmed up in Park. In Drive it drops to about 550 - 600.
