intrested in swapping out a 727 for a powerglide but what advantage, except a 727 will go off like a time bomb

We also have a powerglide in our 68 Valiant 496 strip only car. Runs consistent low 11s , but I feel it should go faster, even at 5400 feet. And I have been wanting to swap in a 727. I have been running 727s since 19 7 2, and I've never had one explode. I think they are a great transmission. The problem with a 727 is that you can't do a burnout in first gear. If you do that and the tires suddenly grab, the over-running clutch may go bad. And that results in an overspinning condition. Then it may explode.

Its no problem doing water box burnouts in with 2nd gear start. I have a 5000rpm chip in my line lock system. I set the line lock, floor it in second gear, it goes up to 5000 and the chip kicks in, let it go for about 2 more seconds in second gear and then shift into 3rd gear, take it up to 5000rpm on the chip, let it go for about 3 more seconds, then release the line lock and burn out of the box for about 15 feet and let off the gas and pull on to the start line to stage....I think about everyone does the same thing.

Yes, 2nd and 3rd gear burnouts are the way to go with a 727. That's what I do, too. But don't try it in 1st gear, it can cause major problems with the one way clutch.
