Hood release cable repair?

I suppose something is missing at the end of the cable housing. If you pull the handle, you can pull the cable housing through the bracket.
How did this look originally? Anyone fixed this? Add a sleeve with JB Weld?

If you can fit it over the end, perhaps some electrical heat shrink tubing?
