Installed an MSD ignition

Lately I've been having all kinds of goofy infuriating electrical problems with my stock 440. Quitting and stop lights. May be it would restart, maybe it wouldn't. A few tow jobs to a garage who found nothing. Static from the radio when applying the brakes or turn signals. This was driving me crazy.

A friend suggested an MSD setup. Expensive I said. Can you trust it now? he said. No I said. Well? he said.

So I took the plunge and installed an MSD box and coil. With help, I basically rewired it.

WOW!!!!! What a difference. It sounds louder. It feels stronger. And it pulls harder. Well worth the investment. And no more quitting and no more radio static.

Congrats.

I tossed in an MSD ignition on my 440 for fun. I just followed directions and asked questions here and on the MSD forum. I even made my own MSD spark plug wires for the experience. Things went smoothly. No issues here.


Time to toss in an MSD Atomic EFI.

I've done it on the last two cars I built and they ran great!

I use the 6AL so I have a rev limiter and use a recurved factory electronic distributor.

Ive hidden the box under the battery tray and hidden the wiring as well as bypassed the funky ballast resistor on my 330.

Couldn't be happier!

I put on msd 6al 2 programmable with pro billet distributor and new coil. Works great! I have other issues with motor but not ignition. Fires right up. The only thing I would say is increase the gap in the plugs.. I went from stock .035 to .045. And still works great.

Good point about the gap. More gap, more spark. Anyone using E3 plugs?

Yep with my vac / mech advance diz and 6al mopar yellow cap batt with a tuff stuff alt no charging issues no starting issues no hesitating issues all good. it works good system is easy to install as well.

It's all ok.. I've found what works for one, may not work for another...for me it's good. I've got a few friends that don't like msd too.. But a few more that swear by it... ..??? Who knows

I've had more failures than success with MSD. I have only one working box from the half dozen purchased. I returned them all to MSD over and over again only to fail as quick as 5 minutes (Nice refurbish guys!) to a max of 4 weeks running time only to fail again and again, over and over.

My advice is to leave your OE ignition in there ready to run at a moments notice should your MSD fail at anytime.

I've run MSD boxes since they came out in the late 70s. Never had a problem. Take a walk through the pits at any race (drags, circle track, off-road, etc) and it's easier to count the cars that don't have an MSD box. As was said above, to each his own and personal experiences will vary. This is mine. Would have said NASCAR, but it's tough to get in their pits.

Same as these other fella's...On my third car with one. Never had an issue. I wouldn't go back. They are a noticeable performance upgrade IMO.

When you install a ready to run distributior can you eliminate the ECU

If you use a box msd 6 etc u can along with the ballast resistor.

Love my ready to run pro billet in the 440 six pack. Levels above what I was running before.

I currently have the MOPAR electronic conversion in my 66 Charger (383). Thinking about changing over to MSD pro billet. Question is which one. Summit list a mechanical (8545)or ready to run vacuum advance (8386). For those running the pro billet version, which one are you using?

Myself I dont use MSD in my 63 but we have it in my sons Dart. MSD is a great ign but if you have a good ign the MSD wont make alot of difference. Not unless the ign you have before the MSD is junk. I run the MP orange box on my 63 that was on my boys Dart. We put the MSD on his that was given to him and his car ran the same with the MSD. Starts the same and runs the same et. So I grabbed up the MP orange box and acell coil and use them on my 63. And they dont miss a beat. But I like the multi-spark from the MSD so I may go to it one day. Ron
