Hey Guys, just wondering if what I see with my IR gun is normal. I see a hotter temperature on certain parts of the engine than I see at the top hose (right near the thermostat housing).
When I see 180 on my thermostat housing (reading at the hose) I can also read the valley pan at about 200. As well as the bolt head of the thermostat housing, around 200 there as well. Is this normal?

Can anyone with an IR gun provide a comparison of the following:
Coolant temperature gauge reading
IR gun reading at top hose, just above thermostat
IR reading at valley pan

I'm sure it would be valuable info for everyone!

Thanks guys!

I've found the best results come from black surfaces.

Is it normal to get a higher reading off the valley pan vs the radiator hose?
