On all the exterior chrome trim, should i be putting some sort of tape or other paint protection down first, then the trim? IMG_7679.jpegIMG_7680.jpeg

Seems to me your concern of whatever you do is not to enhance water entrapment vs drainage.
Those spring retainers have to remove a spec of paint on the thin edges of the holes upon insertion it would seem, and that is where corrosion would likely start. Maybe a small dab of water-resistant (not lithium) grease/wax on the springs to promote insertion and give some long-term rust prevention might be a suggestion?

A couple coats of high quality ceramic coating might be the best thing.

Not to concerned about hole corrosion, just new at this and thought for the length of the trim on top of fresh paint might need something like tape…. Im finding out thru online videos people just snap them in with nothing underneath
