Just bought a 383 for $150

I’ll definitely keep the fuel pump pushrod after reading all the horror stories here. And yes, I would really only want the block for a stroker build.

center sump pan is car. motor mount brackets are truck.
valve cover are early - mid 70s . So its a hodge podge or parts. But its easily worth the 150 as a core engine

Ok, thanks for the information everyone! Once my underfloor slab is poured I’ll dig into it.

Anybody got a Ram with the Sno-Fighter(?) option to compare the idler pulley layout with?
Could be someone dumped the 383 in w/o too much investment to drive to the dealer for a trade in or sell outright.

This engine I believe was stored in a barn, at a now closed dump. It’s not seized, and looking into the oil fill hole, the rocker gear is quite clean. I’m hoping someone pulled it for a project and it’s OK. Does anyone know about the passenger side engine mount? Truck maybe? I’d love to stroke it. 440 source only shows a 3.75 or 4.25 crank for it. also, would TF 240 heads work, or the valves too large?

I'm a Big fan of the 383. I wanted to go with TrickFlow as well. Contacted TF they recommend a minimum of 4.32 bore (440/400) due to size of valves. Even a .060 over 383 give you a 4.31 bore. TK said the only option is to notch the cylinder wall I believe the Intake side or run a cam under .500 lift.

dang, that’s what I was worried about, thanks for the response. Maybe ported Edelbrocks or some other smaller valve head. I’ll want more than .500” though. Also, has anyone heard of an inexpensive stroker kit for the 383 like 440 Source? They only show a 3.75 or a 4.25 kit. Hoping for a 4.125 crank, not sure how much throw the block can handle.

Stroker kits for all big mopars except 361, 413, and 426 wedge are out there. You can still buy the original Isky notch tool used on the Maxies.... I sure wouldn't worry about ruining a 383 block....they were made in spades compared to every other Mopar big block.

After all the work, I sure don’t want to ruin it and do it again. I know 400s are the go to block, but let’s hear about some stroker 383 builds out there people? Gotta be more than a few!
