The title basically says it all.
I am looking to change the exhaust to get a more muscle car sound for our 67 Belvedere. We have already added an Edelbrock performer manifold and 1406 carb along with Pertronix ignition system. I know I want duals from the manifolds back with either an x or h pipe. After that I still am very nostalgic for the sound of good old glass packs. Is there any reason I would want to go with a mail order exhaust system package over going to a good local ahop and having them do it all?

If you want the good ol sounds, you don't want the x pipe.
Let the ruffled feathers begin.

I'm lucky in the fact that I have a local muffler shop that I can tell what I want, and come back in a few hours and have exactly what I was looking for.

For example here are a couple pics of my home-built system on my 65 318 Poly 65 Coronet. I used cheap glass packs but, they do drone about 55 MPH (I plan to change them for quieter mufflers). I used 2" pipe and purchased U bends.

Why is that? I thought having an X or H pipe did not impact sound as much as it help scavenging and performance for a relatively minimal cost.

I had that growing up but anymore there are fewer and fewer of those shops around to do that. I have a couple recommendations in my local(ish) area that I will look into more.

I just buy my own mandrel bends, straight pipes, mufflers, make my own X pipes or H pipes, then make my own full exhaust systems. It may take me a good part of the day, but I know it's done how I want it and much less expensive.

I like that idea but I am not certain I can convince my wife that there has really been any savings since I do not own a welder and would need to buy one. :p

Best way to learn. Buy a welder and practice, practice, practice.

In your first post all you mentioned was wanting a classic sound. True duals, or with H pipe will get you there. The x pipe like newer cars ( mustangs/ camaros) will give it an all cylinders combined/ single exhaust type sound.

Yes the x and h aid with scavenging. How much aid is aid? Maybe .1% power increase. But not less than 0.

For me. it would depend on how nice of a system you want. TTI (if available for your application) is top notch. The neighborhood exhaust shop can do a nice job as well if they are capable. I have seen some over the top systems that were stick built and some pretty crude ones.

Price shop just for fun. A shop built system may cost you about as much as an out of the box one.

J’s Performance in Dubuque IA or there’s a place in Maqueketa IA but the name escapes my mind

Thanks! I will give J's a call and see what they say. it is getting to be a great time of the year for a nice cruise through the rolling hills and along the river.

Old school sound - I went with Thrush Glasspacks and then got a local exhaust shop to knock up a 2.5" system with a H pipe.
You'll have to trust me when I say it sounds awesome! At the track you can hear it howl all the way down the 1/4 mile. It's nowhere near the quickest, but my son reckons It's always one of the best sounding cars on the day.

Very nice looking car! My wife fondly remembers the sound of glasspacks from when she was a teenager so I think that is what we will be going with!

Make sure you go with 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 even if it's a 318. 2 1/4 all the way back is good or 2 1/2 with 2 1/4 tail pipes is good too. I don't like 2" on anything.

I am looking at the TTI site and now I nee to figure out where to find the casting numbers on my manifolds.

They are cast into the side of the manifold. According to the book they should be LH #2465719 and RH #2843953. It is possible yours were changed at one time so you do need to check.
