In the garage. Under the hood. Again.
Since I'm not the only one to have a 62-5 "B" with a big block and a 318 radiator,I'm hoping one of you cats can help here. My issue: lower hose clearance around the oil filter. I'm running a 16" flex hose now,and it's putting enough pressure on the filter to slightly unseat the gasket(and it's on tight-the filter, that is) and cause some oil seepage. Tried a 19",and the damn thing kept kinking when I tried to install it. Has anyone found a molded hose(or a couple that can be modified) that makes a SHARP right angle at the radiator fitting,to clear the filter, and then around to the pump housing.? I'm not ready to drop 7 Benjamins on a new Mark 7 radiator(though I want to) for proper hose placement for a B/RB mill,so I want to work with what I've got and put that money into something else. Plus,I had the radiator re-cored last year($$$) and want to get my money's worth!

Any ideas, folks? If I absolutely have to,I'll get the new rad, which also means a new shroud, since I had to modify my current one to fit the 318 radiator. I'm looking at a Grand for all that, and that was planned as my machine work fund.

Oh;I'll get some pics out here later to show my dilemma;might better explain things. As always-THANKS!!!

I don't have that year or set but do have a custom upper hose. Take a piece of solid wire, form it to what you need, take that down to a auto parts place anf check the hoses for one that fits mine cost $23 but worth it.

Move the lower outlet to the right! Not that expensive to have done.you shouldn't have to modify your shroud then! Also will be able to correct looking hose.

Thanks guys. I was hoping someone would have a particular application that may work. I have searched numerous books at the parts store;have seen some that looked close in dimension, but didn't have the correct size openings. I need,of course,1-1/2" at the radiator, and 1-3/4" at the housing. The old hose that came with the car somewhat fit;was still close to the filter, but I could still remove the filter. Damn near impossible now. I may have to get two hoses, cut them and splice the two together(Not a fan of that,but...) to get the clearance,Clarence.

Oh;the shroud I have is the Mancini Racing unit, meant for a normal 62-65 big-block radiator. I had to do some trim work to make the top half fit on my 318 radiator.

Your probably not going to like this trick but a hose clamp on the hose right in the middle takes the kink out of that 19 inch hose you were talking about and keeps it somewhat round.

heres a neat trick to give you a pattern for a hose then take the pattern to your parts store then have them look in there hose catalog in the illustared section for a match this is what you do buy one of those 1 1/2 1 3/4 or what ever size aluminum or tin what ever its made out of metal flex hose only a few bucks the ones that various cars had that went from the heat sheild on top of the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner you can bend it to about any shape and it stays there and you can pull the length on those in or out think like how a slinky goes in and out except when you pull these out they stay there try it it works great dorman/motormite makes them check the help rack at the parts store.

I've done this before and it works well. If you have an Advance Auto, the flexible metal hoses are near the vacuum hose and fittings, usually with the oil / air filters.

I had the same issue, seems like i used a Gates lower hose for 68-69 Barracuda w/383. it had to be trimmed a little. trying to find my receipt. i also run the smaller oil filter. hope this helps John

THAT'S what I'm talking about! Like I said before, there was a molded hose on the car when I got it;it was so freakin' old and stretched that I wrapped it in electrical tape just to get by. John;I'll check one out at the parts store tomorrow and we'll see what transpires. Hopefully this will help someone else out as well. THANK YOU!

Folks;we have success!

MAJOR thanks to Johnhinds;that hose fit very well on the car. I'll be able to remove and install the oil filter without using compound cuss-words. For those who may also benefit,it's a Gates #20609 lower hose for a '69 'Cuda with a B/RB motor. Bug your parts store guy or gal and don't let 'em tell you that there's only a flex hose available! There is a molded unit!

One note: because this hose has 1-3/4" diameter openings in both ends, and 318 radiators have a 1-1/2" fitting,I found an appropriate hose, cut a 1" or so piece and slid it over the fitting. Put the lower hose over that, double clamped it and NO LEAKS!!! I also had to remove about 1-1/2" from the end that I used on the radiator fitting. Yeah, baby;now to deal with the trans leak issue(yet to be found) and we be rockin' the streets soon.

Glad i could help,I may need your advice someday. Gates makes a rubber bushing for your lower rad. hose,it goes on your rad. then you put the hose over the bushing, that makes up the differance from 1-3/4" down to 1-1/2". lets just say i have a very knowledgable parts guy when it comes to Mopars. John

just saw this thread now,but just to let everyone know, jegs and summit both sell stainless rad hoses that can be bent to almost any shape and cut to length.they also come with adapters for different hose sizes.they run about 60 to 70 bucks, but are well worth it for custom setups.
