Man Killed on Golf Course . . . The Price of Honesty!

A foursome of guys is waiting at the men's tee while a foursome of women is hitting from the ladies' tee.

When the final lady is ready to hit her ball, she duffs it 10 feet. Then she goes over and misses it completely. Then she hacks it another ten feet and finally hacks it another five feet.

She looks up at the patiently waiting men and says apologetically,

"I guess all those f##king lessons I took over the winter didn't help."

One of the men immediately responds, "Well, there you have it. You should have taken golf lessons instead!"

He never even had a chance to duck. He was only 43 ...

When I was a kid I caddied at the local 18 hole. They had a Pro Am tourney every summer. One year I was carrying for an out of town pro who was a loud mouth idiot. The other caddies were all buddies of mine and we had worked together for years. Out on the #3 tee we were waiting for the foursome ahead to get going. The group consisted of the local pro, his wife, the course owner and his wife. Neither of the women could hit worth a crap but everyone had always been very nice to them because both guys had wildly bad tempers. So, the ladies do exactly like in the joke above and our four guys are all set to give them hell about it when my three buddies place their hand on the players arms and shake their heads NOOOO!!..the 3 guys instantly stop. I failed to stop my guy on purpose. He went on and on, guffawing and snorting and making fun them.

He was unable to continue playing and had to drop out of the tourney suddenly. He sustained two black eyes a big fat lip and a hernia. I didn't get paid but it was worth it.

Then there was a foursome (local pro, priest, doctor and engineer) waiting for the group in front of them and the group was terrible. Well they started to complain but the local pro said that the group ahead were all firemen who were blinded when they rescued an apartment building that was on fire while it was full of people. He explained that the course let them play gratis as a thank you to them for their bravery and sacrifice.

The priest said ”I'll say a prayer for them so that God may restore their eyesight”. The doctor said “I'll call my doctor buddy and see if there is an operation that can restore their vision."

The engineer said “why don't they just make them play at night?!"

Used to play a lot years ago and gave it up some 5 years ago spending more time on my car. Seems like there are more impatient asswipes today. And my temper doesn't deal well with guys behind me blaming me for the effs in front I'm waiting for. **** I get enough of this when I get on the highway so reckon I don't need to drop 40 bucks or more to get more of this bs.

I don't play anymore for the same reasons.

I had some really fun times and met some fine people not to just rag on the downsides. My dad loved golf and remember the days when he was still around and able playing with him; most of the time he beat me. In my chapter in life being a guy in a tie I had a job playing for biz like every week getting invited to play at private courses; but was always a more blue collar guy. Some of my co-workers looked cross-eyed at me because I had an old car and fixed stuff around the house myself. That was like my dad who taught me a lot. The PGA has always been more of an irritation with their grandiose stance yet some of the most beloved players were more blue collar: Palmer, Trevino, and Zeller. When I was at pro-tournaments I actually had quick funny chants with Trevino and Zeller by chance having been a few feet away from them. Others well known who I could name stood a few feet away waiting for several minutes wouldn't even look at the folks standing next to them. I suppose just their personalities. But then remember when McCord was banned from the Masters for saying the greens were like bikini waxed? Here's a guy with a personality who gave the otherwise bland commentary some pizzazz. And who can forget the perhaps naïve comment by Zeller when Tiger took a possible win from him. Ok to be all politically correct, Zeller shouldn't have said it and he apologized; he was just trying to be funny but he the went seriously downhill losing sponsors without anyone tossing him a lifeline including Tiger. Sorry - today when I occasionally watch the pros seems none have the Palmer, Zeller, Trevino, or Payne Stewart persona then again I no longer know who these guys are so could be mistaken. And geez, don't allow the guys to wear friggin shorts when it's 95 degrees out? Who the hell is concerned about this today anymore? The people who used to wear ties to ball games?

I used to live in Augusta and have attended the Masters and the practice rounds several times. Many of the players are easy to talk to during the par 3 event and even the practice rounds. Once they get into the main event, not so much. Can't blame them, they have a lot to think about then.

Yeah - some can't break out of their mind set and certainly can't fault them for that. Was comical following Trevino yacking non-stop and I recall some players didn't like being paired with him as it was too distracting for them. My motto was if I played the first two holes like **** I opened up a beer and tipped the beer girls to come back in the next two holes and next two or three thereafter when I was playing on the company's dime or unless we had a stash in our bags. I drank a lot of beer back then.
