I have my 727 apart for a full rebuild. Im working on the front clutch. The friction plates i removed are .087 and .068 steels. The kit i have only has friction plates that are .062 and .068 steels. I have it assembled with 5 friction plates and still have .165 measuring between the pressure plate and the tall part of the wave ring. Can I put a steel in-between the pressure plate and the snap ring? That would bring my clearance down to .097. More questions to follow im sure.

Also, I read the wave snap rings soften the shifts. Is it worth swapping to flat snap rings?

Thanks
Shane

Yes dump the wave ring. The snap rings are selective thickness to get where you need to be. Same snap rings for both clutch packs.

I have used an extra steel plate on many Torqueflites with success. The clearance has a wide range but, various shift kits sometimes spec a particular range-be aware.

you can use an extra steel if needed. They also sell thicker steel plates and different thickness snap rings.
Don't mix up the fiber washer on the pump. It adjusts where the depth of the stator seals where it runs in the drum and also adjusts the input shaft endplay.
Usually don't have to change it if re-using the same pump, drum, gears.

I have used an extra steelie in the clutch pack to get the clearance I wanted. My rule of thumb clearance is .015" per clutch disc. 4 clutch = . 060" ; 5 clutch = .075" . Yeah, ditch the wave snap ring for solid one. If your transmission has a 3.8 or 4.2 (Don't use a 5.0) kick down lever, discard the outer spring under the servo. I usually discard the accumulator spring, too. Some transmissions did not come with this. If you are using a shift kit, also disable the spring in the rear servo. I have found timing/overlap problems on 1-2 manual shift, if you do not do this. Make sure the set screw under the roller sprag clutch is tight.
