When I last posted, I indicated that we are ready to paint. In the passing time a number of issues arose:
  1. The painter rejected the prep work as unsatisfacory. He didn't like the line of the window removal on the drivers side and noticed five minor depression on the roof. When working with shiny paint imperfections are enhanced. The prep work was done over.
  2. We changed the interior color from green and white to black and white.. To make up for lost time, I have all the interior parts at home and am restoring them one piece at a time.
  3. My wife passed and i went into a funk which I'm working my way thru now. I'm dedicating this car to her and making sure everything is first class.

The paint work consisted of a sealer coat, three applications or paint and three clear coat application. The car will sit for 5+ days and then undergo a five stage wet sanding process. Hoping to get it to really pop. The third photo is taken from close up under bright light to show the effect of the metal flake in the bright sun.

While the car was being prepped the second time, the brakes were done. A disc conversion at the rear and big Baer brakes all around.

On the home front, my rec room and one bay of the garage is full of restored and/or refurbished parts.

Painted doba

One more photo of the painted car provided to show the fender lines and the effect of removing the small side windows. The temporary wheels on the car are 17 in truck wheels. The original 15 in wheels do not clear the brakes.

When you reconditioned the interior plastic pieces did you encounter any pieces that were chalky, worn and faded? How did you recondition these? My 77 Cordoba has been with me for 30 years now, was my first car and is my favorite ride. I have plans on updating the interior but am stumped on how to proceed with some of the plastic pieces.

I would have loved to see your original thought of 5.7 Hemi go into your Cordoba (maybe mine too someday).

My condolences on your wife passing. You have built a great car in her memory.

Sorry to hear about your wifes passing. The car your building and dedicating to her is top notch

Most of the interior rear vinyl parts were sun roached. I got used maroon replacements from National Moparts in Beaverton and repainted all the interior pieces white with vinyl paint. In addition, the dash pad was cracked in two places. It so happened that National Moparts had an OEM replacement which I'll paint black.

I was not able to get a driver's side rear panel in great condition. the best I could do is one with a hole in it about the size of a toonie. The best place to get these parts repaired is a specialist in vinyl and plastic. If you can't find such a specialist in your area, the next best is a marine shop that does custom work on boats. The guy I'm working with is repairing damage on the console and rear panel. he's fixing the vinyl - I'm painting the final product to match the other pieces.

You're not to far away, if you want to take this discussion further and see the onging project, you're more than welcome to drop over.

Until you pointed it out I didn't even notice you had filled in the side windows. My son and I have kicked that idea around many times but we were worried how it would look. I must say it looks awesome and I know what I'm going to do before I get it painted again.

Are you going to stripe it? A Roadrunner strobe would probably look really cool.

I Had the same thought as you about striping the car. My advisors suggested not for two reasons. The first is that we want it to look modern. Stripes are dated. the second is that we used metal flake paint and a non flake stripe may clash with the paint.

I don't know why it is that there are so many older Mopars in Alberta. I have 3 J bodies (2 Miradas (one a CMX) and a Cordoba Crown Coupe). They are mostly in decent shape regarding the body rust, too. Although, to be honest, the lack of salt usage may have something to do with it. 2 of the 3 cars that I have found are from outside of the big cities (they were so far out, in fact, that the GPS unitss were fairly useless for guidance). I know there are a few more late bodies out there, including a very rough looking Charger Daytona.

its a combination of dry air and no salt that preserves these beauties. The downside is that the bright sun roaches exterior paint and interior vinyl. they are much better that they may first appear.

What is your opinion?

The guy I'm working with just returned from SEMA with some ideas for exterior trim for which I'd like your opinion. At this point the entire car will be black and the windows tinted dark. In addition, the tail lights have black tinted lenzes and LED bulbs. The front turn signal light have also been tinted. The wheels that have been ordered are five spoked shiny black with a maltese cross effect on each spoke. The car will look sinister when done

These are his ideas from SEMA:
  • Install a headlight conversion kit. The headlights have a projector system much like a modern Mercedes in the centre. The edge has a band of red LED lights which would be used when parking at night and look really cool.
  • Install a caliper ring lighting system on each wheel again using LED lights. Keep in mind the side marker lights have been removed. With the car being completely black, the only thing visible from the side at night would be red rings. He's done four vehicles this way already and thinks its really cool.
  • Put red LED lights around the license plate. On its own, I think this would be tacky, but if done in conjunction with the other two items, it makes sense.

The red license plate lights could be wired to the brake light system to only come on while braking.
