Hi,

I've wanted to own a 68 Charger for a long time. I am in Afghanistan on my 3rd deployment and finally decided to do it. I searched for about two months for a nice solid rust-free body, and picked up a 1968 Charger with a slant-6 in it and a three-speed on the column. I honestly thought it was funny, and planned to rip the engine and transmission out and replace it with a big block. But it looks like I may own the only one ever made, and I'm not sure what to do.

I just wanted to cruise around in the muscle car of my dreams. Now I'm actually thinking of restoring a numbers matching in-line six??

What are your thoughts?

Thanks.

welcome sounds like a rare and unusual combo i would keep it original slant six and all and drive it.

Hey Del.this is just my thought,do what you want with the car and have fun,i would keep all the parts you remove from the car ,and store them if you have the room.you can always return it to stock one day if you like.Just my ideal.I am a Canadian ,and your freedom means our freedom also,so be safe .thank you for your service

The /6 engine is bulletproof, and will give good mpg, and they can be hopped up too! Plus, the coolness of a slant 6 in a Charger!

I agree with MrKinger.... I didn't even know that combination even existed! IMO build it how you want but definitely keep all the original parts (and take about 100 as-is pictures before any changes). Personally, I street race, so I'd go with a big block.... but gas ain't cheap & my Roadrunner gets 10mpg highway if I keep my foot off it. Maybe do body & interior first while you think about it???

I think there are about 5 known to exist...there were never supposed to be any /6 Chargers with 3 on tree ever made. I had a chance to buy one, was too much money at the time.

Fix it up good, and drive it to shows, it will get more attention than that 68 Hemi car that you parked next to

Welcome, and thank you for your service to your country. A lot of the members of this board are active duty military or veterans so we have our love of country and love of Mopars in common. I like the rare combo of the Charger with the /6 and 3spd. Like these guys say, Drop a 440 and a TF or 4spd in her but don't lose any of the original stuff. Good luck to you and all of our troops.

it's a rare combo, but for good reasons

exactly what he said, I will add... build it how you want it... drive it like you stole it... thank you so much, for your military service, to our fine contry... it's a rare combo for a 68 Charger, but for a good reasons, almost nobody wanted or ordered a 225ci slant 6, let alone 3 on the tree, in their 68 Charger's, back in late 1967 or 1968 especially when you could get "any other engine combo" from the lowly 318ci-426ci Hemi... good luck with your new project, what ever you decide to do, after all "it's your car", do what ever "floats your boat", not what others want you to do, it's still just a Slant 6 Charger it will never be worth a ton of money just because it's rare combo & has a Slant 6... that's my honest opinion, like a$$ holes, everyone has one...LOL..., just save everything you remove, if you plan on going thru with the V-8/727tf swap/conversion... you will need different torsion bars, cross member, K-member, engine & trans mounts, shifter & linkages, throttle cable, drive shaft, possibly steering column & box, possibly rear end/axle depending on which rear end/axle it came with {needs an 8-3/4" at a minimum, with a V-8 especially a B/RB} & exhaust system, possibly peddle assembly too, at a minimum... Try Mancini Racing Mopar Performance experts since 1972, {Summit Racing & Jegs for parts also} &/or Schumacher Creative Services @ www.engine-swaps.com parts for your V-8 swap & advice...

Welcome to the site. Me personally, I would muscle that car up, but that is just me. I am a V8 guy. But as most here have said, make sure you keep all of the original equipment. Good luck on your deployment and the build of your car.

Hello again everyone. First, thank you for all your support. We all appreciate it. Second, thanks for your advice. I decided to go with the slant-6. What the hell, right? I wanted a big block, but sometimes you just go with what life throws at you. I figure I'll save some money now restoring it (instead of modifying it). I'll drive it around for a year or so and leave it listed on a few sites for a high price. If no one comes along to buy it and I still want to throw in a big block, I'll pull out the engine and trans and throw in a late model hemi! It's a win/win I think. So if you guys know anyone looking to buy a fully restored and original slant-6 3-on-the-tree 68 Charger next summer, send them my way! Take care, and thanks again. Rob

A few years ago there was a charger with a slant 6 at the mopar nationals and it got as much attention as the hemi cars. I don't really like the slant 6 in a b-body but it's such a rare car.

that's a really cool find. Build it like you want it and store anything you take off if you convert to a big block and 4 speed.

Welcome aboard Rob! Good luck and thank you for your service..

I say do what YOU want with it......but if it was mine, I'll be damned if I would rip it apart. It'll never be a powerhouse, but surely it's gotta be rare. Pics would be great.

According to my figures on the 68 Charger 225 3 spd there are 2 known to exist. Before you lift a wrench find out more info about it. Get a hold of some big time MoPar people and see what they say. Call Galen and let him know what you have. If you want a hot rod Charger this isn't the car to use as the base stock.
