Off idle stumble.

Well now we know it's not off idle stuff but secondaries kicking in too fast. Now most likely a spring change is needed in your vacuum secondaries.

Your last entry talks about stomping the throttle when you get the stumble. If that has beed the case the whole time yes the stumble can very well be rear of carb. and req. a spring change in the sec. canister.

When you are doing your idle adjustments with a vacuum gauge proper is to check vacuum idling IN gear with emergency brake set unless your car is a 4 speed.

Good point. Ill check.

Ok, here's the deal. I took the carb off and put it on the bench. I checked the accelerator pump clearance with the throttle wide open and had none UNTIL I pushed the pump arm down. Then I had TONS of clearance, probably. 040 or more. With throttle wide open and pump arm held down, I adjusted to .012.
I see now why it needs to be done this way. It eliminates the possibility of slop in the mechanism and assures complete travel of the pump.
Thanks RJS for that advice.

While I had the carb off, I pulled the vac secondary and checked the spring. It was yellow, so to satisfy everyone who was convinced that it was early opening secondaries I put in the purple spring.

The issue is almost completely gone, plenty good enough to satisfy me.

Thanks All.

Please answer my last question that I PM'd you with either here or in a PM and we can make this throttle response perfect with just a little more.

Let me be sure what you are requesting. Adjust idle mixture screws for highest vacuum with car idling in gear, (instead of park) correct?

yes sir, in gear, brake on, tires locked, and vacuum advance unplugged but carb. port for it plugged and after you get best/highest vacuum reading on each side or all 4 if you have 4 corner then reinstall vacuum advance and you may have to actually lower the idle screw

Done. The float levels were a little low, but the idle mix screws made little significant difference.

The car runs really well, if not perfect.
Thanks all! I'm done.
Happy New Year.
Bernie.

Very cool, if I can ever be of help just ask. There is a lot I don't know but I'll give you the 2 minute tour to what I know anytime!
